From my January hatch, I took pics of all of them originally. I took more pictures every 1 - 2 weeks after that for the first month. Now, I only taking pictures once a month. At 7 weeks, I culled anything I knew I wasn't keeping. . . . Bent toes, no feathering on cockerel legs, side sprigs, . . . . Basically any clear DQ's.

Ok - So this brings me to my next question...
If you had 2 Black Copper Pullets a few weeks old and could only keep one, would you go for the larger more active/aggressive one? or the more timid one?
The active one has a white spot behind it's eye and some white near the beak...
The more timid one has no white on the face at all, but does have significant white outer wing feathers...
Feel free to tell me at this point it would be a guess, but if it were you, which would you choose?

Beautiful garden... I want to begin working on ours, but it won't stop snowing. We got 6" Friday - although today and yesterday it has been in the 40's(warm for us) and everything is melting. The snow was all gone, but then a Nor'Easter hit!

Steve~ The Splash that has me really confused... is a month old now and def. not a roo, but many a time during the month I swore roo just by feathering....this is a Bill chick too. Its bcm sibling also a Bill chick has had me just as vexed.....as of today they both look like females. I kept watching for a comb but no such luck yet. I wont make any decisions on them for another 2 weeks. The other splash chicks are now at someone else house and they were three weeks old and still had me guessing, both were Davis birds. As for which chick to keep... I would keep the chick that shows more white on the face area. Its been my experience that the darker the head as a chick the less copper upon maturity. Just my 2 cents.

To be honest, by looking a them all and knowing the little I know, they all have me guessing. The pics don't always show what we can see in real life. I hope in another week or so things become more evident - ahhh what fun

Thanks for all of your input!

I am happy that my other pygmy doe started her labor on such a nice day! It makes working out in the garden that much more important..so I can listen for signs of distress. It never ceases to amaze me when babies come! I love'em all.
I will try to get some pics of my newest chicks I hatched out from my blue Marans...I've got some super chunks on my hands!

You could use a unicolor BLACK male, not a black copper, bred to a Cuckoo hen. Look at this link and scroll down to the pics for what these two birds produce. Black barred males, and unicolor black females. Is this what you are looking for?

http://kippenjungle.nl/kruising.html Well never mind, that link didn't work!

Are there any other types of marans that would work, I know there are white marans. Also I thought the male just hade to be non barred to make a sex linked, are you sure black coppers would not work.
