Hey Debbi, took off another batch of chicks this morning. Had about 20 wheaten included. I culled the two week old ones yesterday for the first time. Will PM you later on tonight.

Cold Weather? You mean you don't have tomatoes on your plants yet?
haha....tomatoes in the ground up here? not without some kind of cover over them for protection. The average last frost here is May 15th....
Well at least you're seeing some hope of Spring, I'm guessing you can grow salad most of the year HUH!!! Ya have to remember, it could always be worst or you can move down to God's country and have seafood and salad!!!!
Hi, Have to say that I have never had a BC female with a solid white feather in wing or tail. I had a couple last year with a couple of wing tips white and culled. My motto is if they have white feathers in the males after the Juve molt around 4-5 months they are going to eat someone else's feed. Another big Fault in the BC is the white undercolor in the Hackle of the males. The pure white wing or tail feather is a DQ.

I spent 4 years in Va and another 3 in NC, I did like the snow and the joy of all the seasons the first 2 years I was there but it got old quick. Being from La and having more sumer than winter, I have to say that I'll take the high heat and humidity instead of the cabin fever.
You need to put your hens in the spare room and get some eggs or just send a pullet down to me!! HAHAHA!! It'll keep the family company on the trip down.
Did the Coonasses at least bring you some fresh vine ripe strawberries, cracklin, boudin, smoked sausage, smothered okra and a jar of roux? You already have chickens that won't lay, ya might as well make gumbo. You need to ask them about the chicken sausage and patties.. YUM YUM!!!
Haha...they did bring some treats back for us indeed!
I used to live in minneapolis for almost 10 years and moving back here is like a breath of fresh air. The winters up there were so stinking long and dark. Even with the cold weather and the delay in planting here, I'll take that over the snow coming down in april and etc anyday.
I'm not sure if I could handle the hot temps further south. I lived in Texas for a year when I was 19 and it about killed me in the summer with the heat and humidity. I am not a warm weather person at all....nor am I really a cold weather person...I like my temps in the middle of the road. If I could have it 50 to 75 degrees all the time...with a rare warmer day I wouldn't mind at all!!!

I'm working my way towards a set up of using cold frames and my greenhouse to grow year round. I grow a pretty good variety of fruits, veggies, and herbs and grow extra for canning, freezing and drying through the rest of the year. Its a step at a time, but I enjoy the process.
Well good news on the female not having white that you know of.. This is my starter flock, and well, we all have to start somewhere.. I really would like the chance to see how this guy molts out.. and go from there.. Right now, my biggest issue.. is that I have too many males.. I think I have 2 females.. So, if anyone on here wants to sell a few chicks let me know.
I have not seen the white under the Hackle .. If you can tell in the pictures that I just posted.. I do think she was right when she said that his tail feather was damaged.. I can see it in the picture.
I hope that my guys do shed the white tips.. they are only about 7/8/9 weeks.. crap, need to look how long Ive had them.. time is flying!.. . so you and Math are right in saying they have time.. The feathering looks good, all the way down to the tip, and none on the middle toe .. The hen is starting to get some red on her head.. just light 2 or 3 feathers which is hard to see if she isnt in the sun..
We have 3 beautiful Maran chicks (about 4 weeks old) a black, a blue and a splash....hoping and praying that at least a couple of them are pullets....still to soon to tell I think! Waiting until the bitter end!
