Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

There was a guy here the other day looking at some car parts dh has for sale and he started asking about what kind of rooster is that? Meaning a BCM rooster that we let run around here who is really pretty but far from perfect lol and I showed him those eggs and he about flipped. He'd never seen any Marans eggs before lol. He thought they were fake. I told him to crack one open lol.

I wish I had eggs that color from girls in my laying pen. Where did you get your start with your BCMs? There is no one near me that has them laying colors anything like that of the people I know. If you ever sell hatching eggs...put me on the list lady!

Not all my hens lay this dark. I have 3 bcms that lay real dark -all from different people. Cheepa who lays the darkest, I got from someone down near Tampa, bought eggs and hatched them. They were dark eggs. I believe they were wade jean x presley. The other dark laying hen I have is a bayhorse bonnie hen she lays a big dark egg (the one in the pic with the speckles that looks big) I wished they all laid that large. The 3rd dark laying hen I have, I got from pasofinofarms (hatched out from a dark egg). So I am going to try and make just a dark laying pen with the rooster who came from my avatar egg as the main roo. He isn't a perfect roo..has a high tail and a short back but should hopefully pass on that dark gene. I also have one blue hen, cocoa, from peachick who lays really dark large eggs. She lays darker than some of my other bcms.

Well, I think they are just lovely. Its slow going for me with my blues, but do have a couple of BCMs that lay decent eggs, but yours are just wonderful

I'm like you, it's too hard for me to read the pencil markings. I use white chalk.

She's a cutie! Love those plants. Am I seeing a Datura on the left? Love them! I have some purple seeds somewhere I need to plant. Do the chickens bother them at all? The "brugmansia", is it the same thing as "Bougainvillas (sp?)"? We had a huge plant around the front porch when we lived in CA. That bright fushia color always made me smile. Going to be a nice day here today, so will pot up some pretty Petunias I bought yesterday.

I have a new "man" in the midst as of this morning! JR, who will be 8 weeks tomorrow, let out his first crows for me, on this foggy morning. He sounded like a hoarse cat! Pitiful, but cute as all get out!

You would think he'd be a tad intimidated with all the other roos out there belting away, but no, he gave it his best shot. Keep practicing my boy!

I put the roo, who has been crowing his head off in quarantine for the last month, in with my 6 week old chicks this morning.

I watched them for 30 minutes this morning and everything was going fine.
I will be working out there most of today and will keep a close eye on him.

However, I hope he takes them under his wing so to speak. I wish I hand some older girls for him . . . . but I don't want to give him my BCM roo's girls. My BCM roo was great at adopting chicks when he was a younger roo and this Delaware roo is showing all the signs of being just as good.

I hope he takes to his fathering role and STOPS crowing so much.
