Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Nah, normal, normal. Just me, but from what I've seen, they all do their own thing individually. The differences should even out within a couple/few weeks. They change so drastically at this age, sometimes it's hard to keep up!

I realized that was going to sound weird right after I posted it. The other cockerels all have darkish combs. Hold on, I'll get a pic..

Every other cockerel has a blackish-red comb, (I know it'll lighten up to a uniform red) but this one guy has bright pinkish red dome-shaped comb. It's so bright it almost looks fake. It just looks markedly different than all the others do right now.
I'm sure the white tips are just residual tuxedo white, I just found it interesting that his took longer to fade than the others and that comb just jumps out at me.

He might just be maturing faster than the others. I often have one in the group who will get a big red comb and wattles first and start acting like the dominant rooster early on.

Was nice to be able to get my hands in some dirt yesterday! Potted up some Petunias in a red/purple combo. They really brighten up the deck, and the hummers are already checking them out. Awoke to thunder again this morning

, but it's starting to clear up now. The chooks were pretty ticked off by the time I got out to the coop. "Ahh, HELLOOOO! Been daylight for hours now, you lazy twit!!"

Some BOSS, some bread, and let out to free range made it all better.

Hey, Debbi-

I did the "dirt" thing yesterday, too. Planted some grapes and black raspberries. I got everything mulched using some of the stuff I cleaned out of the coops and brooders.

Guess what I saw first thing this morning when I looked out the door?

Free range hens happily moving all the mulch away from my new plants.

Now what I don't understand is they have had all spring to dig through that pile of mulch, so why do they think they have any business in it once I put it on my plants?

I guess they just can't resist the smell of fresh dirt!

I've got 3 little BCM's in the plastic tote brooder right now. along with 3 golden lakenvelders, 3 black rosecombs and about 6 brown-red old english. Cute little boogers. No pics. Not on this computer, anyway.

I know what you mean there! When I was cleaning out the coop when the weather broke, I raked it all out the door and then loaded it in the wheelbarrow. You would've thought they found a gold mine in the stuff that was laying on the ground! Dust baths ensued all day long!

So I knew better than to put that gold on anything here that wasn't fenced off! I also found Pip on my deck this morning, checking out the Petunias!

Not on my deck buddy! He quickly made the aquaintance of Mr. Broom!

Oh Steven, so sorry! How long did you keep them in the bator?

They are still in the incubator but if they dont do anything by tomorrow, I'm going to take them out.
