Okay, here is what I did w/ a broody Silkie who sat on 7 mutt eggs for me and I timed the hatch with some of my Wheaten Amers that were being incubated. swapped out the eggs w/in a day of hatch and she hatched them all. Added several more amer chicks, staggered hatch here, over the next couple of days, always at night and slid them under her. There was a weeks difference between oldest and youngest and she raised 9 of them for a couple of weeks. Pretty cute, a black silkie w/ a bunch of blond heads peeking out under/over her. I digress, would do the switch late in the pm and would pull eggs and leave the golf ball and would check on chicks in 30 mins and again in an hour to make sure momma is adjusting okay to the cheeps. Once you verify acceptance, then pull the golf ball. Only my opinion.

If your broody is a big ole Marans, she should be able to handle 13 eggs pretty easily.

Sherman Update!

Sherman and the blue gal are 22 weeks, the blacks are 20 weeks. I? Waiting waiting waiting for them to lay eggs!!!!!

Hello all, I am really interested in the marans, but sheesh, 1618 pages is a LOT to read through!!! Right now I'm interested in finding some show birds for breeding purposes, and may want to show them myself later.

They won't roost, so may not even know the nest boxes are there! The blues panic if I sneak in in the dead of night an put them on the roosts. The BCMs just sit there. Sherman will flail around till he falls off. He's my special boy!

Maybe I'll put a bucket on the floor and see if that does anything.

Im new to blues , and my friend gave me some hatching eggs that could be blues or BCM , She has Two Roo's in with her BCM hens . 1 Blue and the other BCM. Is there any way to tell sex by color or bye any other meens at 3 days? . They sure are cute chicks , so far I got 1 BCM and 4 blues also had one with a black head and gray body . But it layed on its side for 2 days and never could get up. I couldnt take it anymore and I culled him today when I moved the other chicks to the brooder. Would he have been a Splash? . What do you think of these chicks? 2 of the grays have white around there eyes , the other 2 are darker and no white around there eyes also I can see tiny blotches of copper up by the neck on one of them do these color differences meen anything ? thanks for any help or shared nolage.
