Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Apparently the bayhorsebonnie BCM line can throw black tailed buff. I got one from some eggs I ordered from her.
I don't see why there couldn't be a such thing as a blue tailed buff if it was coming from blue coppers or blue coppers that had the black coppers mixed in which were carrying those black tailed buff genes, since blue just replaces/dilutes the black. I was told some of these lines that throw the black tailed buffs also carry a wheaten gene. Does your roo have light legs or darker slate?

I also have a barred black tailed buff roo that looks very similar to a golden cuckoo but from a different breeder.

Ahhh- his legs are slate. I never paid attention because I was so taken with the feather color- lol!
I will have to hatch more babies from him- I would love to see a splash tailed buff (if that's even possible.)

BTW- Thank you!

Has anyone else had these pop up in thier blue or black copper flocks? They are supposedly jeane/Davis lines.

You should post some pics of him.

I posted some pics here the other day: https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=495365&p=34

Except
for a bit of blue near the butt he's almost solid red now. These pics are from March- gotta get new ones, but the pen I moved them to in the woods (its SO FLIPPING HOT!) has a low ceiling and I can't get any good profile shots.
I had posted pics of him on this thread before, but never even realized there was such thing at a BTB til the other day. He may not be perfect, but its pretty close!

I am keeping him and one blue copper girl and selling the rest of that flock. Trying to get as many eggs as possible before they sell. Its SOOOO hot though- saving up eggs is kinda iffy. I really want a girl or two like that!

I think it says at the marans of australia website that some of the BTBs might not meet standard but still worth breeding. I dont know how to get the lighter shanks but maybe Village Chicken would know. I know the wheatens and the golden cuckoos have lighter shanks similar to the BTB.

Your guy is very beautiful btw !!

i think your right , and from the looks of it there are some wheaten throwing some btb looking birds , i could be wrong but i think btb are one of the hardest colors to create getting the hens right is geneticly hardest to get solid color. some of my wheaten culls were on there way to BTB but i long since gotten rid of them . if u go to the French Marans Club Australia and look at the 2 wheaten hens of mine on a log , ones a darker hen , that hen is on the way to btb but i got rid of her because i am only interested in wheaten and if i ever get and good with wheaten i will work on learning other colors but as slow as i am it will be years

Yes, the one can stand, it's camera shy evidently, and sits!

OK, wing feather experts! Does this look like the possibility of a pullet on the left, and a roo on the right to anyone??

I can't tell what they are other than very cute and on Silkie eggs I got 15 hatched 12 so you can get lucky...my last batch of Black Coppers was a bust none came out to play but I did get 2 Salmons out of 6 eggs so not bad
