Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Kim, This breeding will give you some real nice colored female, but I believe the males will have too much color on chest and overall body. I would not breed the BC one to him, would rather breed her to a splash from the Blue Copper.

I know! Poularde's look like ours too. Wish I was a better photographer, Olivia almost looks brownish in her pic. Sunlight was directly behind her behind!

She is as balck as it gets! Both of their eyes are starting to lighten some too. Hope they get to pumpkin. Yes, the idiot cats, they are so in love, and love hanging with the chickens. They seem to think chicken feed is great, so now the chickens are thinking that cat food ain't too bad either! What a circus this place is!

Pink, I wonder if breeding the big Blue Copper girl to Lil' Bill will bring back a lot of the darkness of their daddy? She is pretty dark too, and even though Lil' Bill has nice coppering, you know he will have a "dark side" in there somewhere?? I think I'd breed both the BCM and the BC to a Splash roo, then take those pullets and breed them back to Lil' Bill. What do you think, am I crazy? Hmm, don't answer that...

My old cat loves to lay in the hen house, he never bothers them and they just walk right over him. I hope to be a Maran owner soon, after drooling through this looonnnggg thread, I have made the decision to add Marans to my incubator on the next hatch. Cant wait to get those deep brown eggs!

Ha ha! Sounds like you are already hooked! Welcome to the dark side...of eggs that is! Plenty of folks right here that can set you up, I'm sure.

I want to get some marans chickens--can anyone tell me the dofference between a black copper maran and a cucko maran? Also, where can I get some--seems all the hatcheries are sold out. Thanks.

Hi, Kathy - a black copper is black with copper accents (super short answer), a cuckoo is sort of a messy barred pattern (somewhat like a barred rock or a dominique, but not as crisp in the barring).

Hatchery quality will not get you dark eggs if that's what you're after...best thing to do is look around on here for folks in your area and check with them directly to see if they have stock available. Or, check Craigslist, though I've seldom seen any of quality advertised through CL. At least not that I've seen, so no offense intended if anyone uses CL for sales!

Hello and welcome to the Marans thread!

First off, the breed name is Marans, always with the "S" on the end, whether you are speaking of one chicken or 100.

Secondly, look through this thread for pictures, or you can do a search on BYC to pull up pics and topics of Black Copper and Cuckoo Marans. There are also Blue Copper, Wheaten, Birchen, Blue Cuckoo, Black Tail Buff, Salmon, Black, White, Golden Cuckoo, etc. Lots of different color varieties to look at!
