Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Jan, I just have the mentality that when someone tells me something that I say will not work, I have to prove them wrong. I know you miss me but afraid to admit it on the forum. Take care.

I'm not well versed in genetics, but I have been following along on this and I see exactly what you are saying, Don. I understand the black and blue copper and what it does there, but I don't see why anyone would need to put the blue/black copper offspring back into the BC line.

Kim, I think in your case I'd be looking for the best splash pullets I could find to put with that roo for your beautiful babies. (Maybe you already have!)

Hello to everyone I haven't talked to for a while!

One reason I got the Black/Blue and Splash Coppers is that so many ppl on here run them together (other breeds) and I only have one pen for Marans. My plan is to have a laying flock and cull the not for breeding birds to the freezer or laying flock. I am thinking now I need breeding pens for my roosters so I can control the females I breed them too and a bachelor pen for the culled males. So much for the back pasture being used for cows

Hey Ivy!

How's life goin down in Kansas for ya? I'm right there with ya on the needing to cull down to start preparing for winter. I am seeing how much work I can get done on pens, but with this crazy weather I'm not sure how long I'll have before I run out of time before winter hits full force. I suppose just keep plodding along eh?

The following two birds are from my hatch that got scrambled with a lot of help from Dad.... I know they are not my stock BECAUSE this is what my cockerels look like....

My pullets normally have lots of copper by now too....

Yet this is the cockerel from the hatch . ..

Kim,

Did you say "Hey" to Cracker in the background ? ? ?

What kind of babies do you think this cockerel and cracker would make ? ? ?

He has enough feathering for the whole neighborhood. There is some feathering on the middle toe too!
He is sooooo dark that I don't want to cull him until I at least try him out a few times.....

Here is the pullet from that batch too. She is not mine either because she does not have the coppering that my pullets display by now....
Her leg feathering is much more controlled than the previous cockerel. Her tail angle is better too. Good shape, just not as wide as the Pinks pullets.
Hey Kim, your babies will set the standard for all future chicks I hatch - - - Love the girls that need a "WIDE LOAD" sign on their behind! LOL

I guess we all got our own version of eye candy - -

Geebs with low riders.
Wynette with the comb delight.
Me with the Wide Load girls....

Oh, I forgot to say that both cockerel and pullet are 18 weeks old ( young)!

Ayeupchuck, my boys have nice rich color BUT I have issues with white wing feathers too. I am hoping Mr. Dark blood here won't have any white feather issues....
