Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Good morning everyone. Love that splash roo. That Birchen color is to die for. I do believe it is my favorite color! Just wanted to share a few pics of my girls from Pink. I just love their shape. They have been laying pretty much everyday now. I wish I could use them for breeding. Again I love their shape. They are built much different than my other Marans. Too bad about the comb issues ooh and they are missing the copper.

I do love them and enjoy seeing them in the yard.

Hey guys I've got a question for you Marans experts!

I bought some eggs from another BYC'er. Three were labeled WM for wheaten maran. Only one has hatched and it's black. I was told Wheaten chicks are yellow.... Can anybody help me out on this one? Is it possible for the chick to be black and turn lighter when it's older? Or was there a mix up and it's not a wheaten maran? The egg is relatively dark brown, not super dark but darker than a lot of brown eggs. The chick is black with a little white/yellow on it's head and belly. It pretty much looks like my cuckoo marans chicks that I've had in the past.

Please please please tell me it could still be a wheaten!

Wow poulard, you have some really pretty girls there. Is your blacks and blues showing any coppering at all sometimes it will show up much later on the coppers. I have had hens that get it when they approach thier one year molt. If you bred back to a copper male the next generation should have much better coppering in the females. If they don't have side sprigs or anything you might have success with the combs if you found a really nice combed male ) I like the large bodies on them and the lacing on the blue hen is just precious, are her eyes still changing color or is it just the camera making them appear light? Sometime mine take forever to change on my blues for some reason.

Galaviana: Love all your birds especially the birchens and that blue girl

! Haha your blue girl looks like a ballerina in that last pic!
I am starting over again with my splashes. Your splash male is coming along nicely. Did you get any splash females to hatch? All I could get was boys from splash lol.

Do you have any photos of the chick? It certainly sounds like it could have some cuckoo in there if it has a lighter spot on its head...

I would also check your yellow chicks real good for dark spots on thier heads they may end up golden cuckoo coloring (of course they would be mixed with wheaton if they are supposedly 'from wheatons' but may look like golden cuckoos). Pics would help.

ETA: Just noticed you said only one hatched so nm what I said about checking the yellow chicks LOLOL, if you had any though, I would be suspicious.

I don't because my only internet access is at work and I'm not supposed to upload photos and things so I kinda have to be sneaky about it.

It looks exactly like my cuckoo chicks. I bought these eggs from another BYC'er and as far as I know she doesn't have any cuckoo but I could be wrong.

I questioned my boyfriend about which egg it came from and he swears it came from the egg labeled WM because he had to help it out (it's butt was stuck because it didn't make the whole big enough). There is an empty egg with a WM on it so it did hatch but the only yellow chick I have is an Easter Egger and I watched it hatch out of a green egg so I know for sure it's not the wheaten

Thank you... I think they have great shape too! flgardengirl one of the BC does have one stray copper neck feather. Unfortunately, the comb issue appears to be a sprig.

Now I believe Pink has taken the culprits out of her breeding program. It is too bad. These are the first girls I have actually wanted to breed. They have nice egg color also. The blue's eggs are just as dark as my BC's. I think I will use the girls for some Olive-eggers. Again I so wish I could use them. It sounds like a nightmare to deal with sprigs. I guess it is good that I did not end up with a breed-able roo. That way I am not tempted.

I was wondering if anyone out there with BCM stock that does not have the white undercoat issue could post a
YOUNG chick photo. Say a photo within the first two weeks?

Here is one of my 10 day old chick photos.. . .
