Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

I'm so upset! Something attacked one of my splash pullets! I am waiting for my mom to come so I can have her help me try to clean the pullet up and assess what the damage really is. I don't see any blood, just torn skin and a muddy mess. Her eyes are clear and she is resting right now out of the wind. I'm just sick about it

I really hope she pulls through. Needless to say...she has her own little crate to rest in at the moment and she will be getting checked on every hour overnight to make sure she is ok.

no...nothing. I'm not sure when she was attacked...but when I got home from work I found her in the lawn where they were freeranging (so no tracks). I haven't had pest problems in quite a while, my hunch is that it might be a stray dog. There is a creek not too far away (a bit over a mile) and people will dump dogs and from time to time and there will be people that have problems with them...they can be vicious at times...but farmers will usually keep them under control. I'm gonna be leaving my birds in for a few days and keep a close watch on the back yard and pens for any signs of anything.

wholeheartedly agree! it used to be really bad...when I was a kid my oldest brother took me fishing on a creek that connects to this one and we had to climb down a steep embankment by an old bridge to the best fishing spot an old farmer had told him about. My brother didn't tell me the farmer had also warned him about the wild pack of dogs that ran up and down the creek....Well.. it was freezing and windy and after we had been out there a while fishing, my brother started acting funny...and basically dragged me up the embankment and across the bridge to the car. I didn't know why until we were crossing the bridge and looked down to see a pack of dogs on the bank not a couple hundred feet from us...there was a bit of a bend in the creek and the wind was blowing in the opposite direction so they couldn't smell us...but those were some scary looking dogs, one in particular was mammoth. Several people had been attacked or chased over the years, that's why farmers started taking matters into their own hands because they would come into their fields where they were working or onto their place and in general wasn't a safe place. Some had said they saw coyotes running with them from time to time.

yeah....it hasn't been like that for years...I'm sincerely hoping it stays that way. Although...with times being bad for so many, i suppose it isn't out the realm of possibility for dumping to pick up again. I live not too awfully far from lincoln and out here...all the creeks connect from one main watersource and it makes it easy for them to have a network of trails and food and water source. All I know...the 22 is gonna be handy and loaded by the back door just in case.

That is scary. We are planning on buying land in the western U.P. and we would have to worry about black bears and wolves...what with the wolf population going up, some people there are saying that they see wolves crossing streets and you could see black bears in the driveway off a restaurant and resort (those are their 'gangs'). I need to start practicing at the shooting range. I might not shoot at the bear but make a warning shot; I've never seen a wild bear or wolves before but I'd imagine wild dogs could get pretty nasty.

yikes! I was just thanking my lucky stars the other day that there are not as many predators like that around here...every once and a while you will see a bobcat or a mountain lion (even though they say they don't exist here). One night my uncle fell asleep in his living room...he has a huge old house with a wrap around porch and since it was the middle of the summer he had his windows open on the bay window...and he woke up in the middle of the night feeling like he was being watched...well he looked out the window only to see a bobcat staring at him from the other side of the screen....just a couple feet from his face. talk about scary.

I do think indeed you should get some practice in at the shooting range....the move from CA to the UP will be quite the change, no? between the bears, wolves and snow...you'll be kept pretty busy.

I was gonna ask on that egg you posted a pic of today....what color girl did that come from? it really is lovely
