Those are some lovely eggs pinkchick. Good luck with your broody I bet you will get some nice babies from Gnarles x BCMs!

I am just getting caught up on the reading after being sick as a dog for the last 3 days. Think I must of had the flu. I still feel like crap but a little better. Dh and the kids have been taking care of the chooks the last few days and when I went out there this morning they were so happy to see me (makes ya feel good lol) except for Storm, my moody dark blue copper roo. He gave me a nasty look, like where have you been? Then tried to bite me. I gave him a little scratch and then he was all sweetness again...men..I tell ya!

I have 2 hens that are different breeds and non related that can't see stuff right in front of them either. They don't perch and they listen for pecking and know where the food dish is that way. They don't really eat anything right off the ground. I have held treats up and they just bite at the air so I have to kinda stick it in their mouths. The only easy way to really give them treats is to put it in the food dish with their other food.

I have read that if the mother hen's nutrition is bad that different deformities including eye deformities/problems can occur. Also, this link from Univ of FL IFAS Extension lists some causes of missing eys and eye abnormalities is related to high incubator temperature and low oxygenation in the first 6 days (see #45/46).

They most definately are NOT the brightest bulbs in the box, but they are so stinkin' cute! Their eyesight problems do come from the heavy crest feathering. The ones with the lesser crests don't bump into things, like me, the coop, the feeder, the water tub, each other....

And you should see the little roos vying for the highest pecking order. They bend their heads over each others back, and dance around in a circle...so bizarre!

x2 I love my silkies too but yeah, I've noticed they seem to be a little intellectually challenged lol. The are so adorable and have you ever noticed when they whine they sound just like little puppies? OMG they are so cute lol. Mine just started to lay again. I really want to hatch out some more fall/winter Silkies.
I had baby Silkies around the holidays last year and it was so much fun.
My two turkey hens really both hate the Silkies. I don't know why. I think they are actually jealous of them. They also look at them like what the heck is wrong with you guys? If they get half a chance they would kill the Silkies, they don't act that way at all with any of the other chickens or ducks. One of my female Silkies got out of her pen once and one of the turkeys took after her and it was a good thing I was there or she would have been dead. Wierd.

Awww...sorry to hear you haven't been feeling well Lenette! That's the worst to miss out on chickers for a few days...but it is so nice to have them miss you when you get out to see them again! I love it!

I was doin chores this morning and when I was getting ready to water I heard some cheeping behind me....and lo and behold one of my cuckoo hens did it! She completed setting through a whole hatch...and she was a perfect lady when I wanted to see what she had under her. I touched her wing and she stood up for me...I saw one babe hatched out and about 4 eggs that are pipped pretty well. I wasn't expecting to have any babies, but maybe it will satisfy my hatching cravings haha
