Yeah...I talked to Marquisella and she said she is selling out of them and won't have any available. I didn't know that CPARTIST had any...or that you had gotten yours from her until I just read your posts this morning...perhaps I shall have to pester them!

I'm looking for as close to the old standard as possible with them as I'm picky about my wyandottes. They are kind of a first love in poultry for me...

Actually, I am keeping my blrws...I had some sold, but the logistics of shippinng them to Florida was too much...so I am keeping them, but culling down to 6 hens.
So, I will be offering chicks this fall.

wahoo!! I'm really excited you are keeping them...because I do think they are beauties! Think you can PM me the details of the chickers?

That is music to my ears that she ships chicks too!

and ohhhhh yes those BLR girls I have from her need the wide load signs...they are chunky and definitely have some junk in the trunk. I love that and would be very sad if they were anything else. I look at them and my big butted Marans and just sigh with utter happiness.

You guys are the best

My Wys are molting so I'm not getting eggs right now.
I still think they need a lot of work though...trying to get consistent type,
good color, larger eggs...and trying to get rid of those dadgum split for single combs

You guys really should get chicks from Marquisella. One of the breeders I got my start
from had birds from her and the Foleys (not sure how far removed) and anything good
in mine are from the work these fine breeders have done. Hers are where I HOPE to
be with mine someday.

I know this is the Marans thread

Hey cpartist ~ We all love junk in the trunk chickens! Pretty birds there! If these guys can put up with my Silkie pics, a couple of BLR pics can do no harm!
lol.png
At least they look like chickens!!

I so understand the molting...when I was doing chores this morning I saw the tell tale signs myself that its starting. I am hoping the ones I want to show later this fall will hold off for a while. I'm loving the coloring on that boy of yours. I like the darker tones...to me the color is nice. I did email Marquisella as soon as she said she had kept some of her since I'm going to be getting some other chicks from her in the spring. I figured its a good way to be efficient and order both kinds and ship at the same time. It doesn't mean I won't be knocking on your door at some point tho

So....my friend picked up the brooder over in Iowa for me! Its not assembled, which I knew, but she said she is pretty certain it is a 5 tier unit and not 4! The way she described it, it sounds like a match for one of the single brooders I already have! So, that's pretty great. I think all said and done I will have 8 metal stackable brooders for the hatching room I'm working on. I'm so excited!! all for 40 bucks!!!

Be sure to post a pic of your brooder once you get it and have it assembled. I paid $250 for a brooder this summer, and I hate the darn thing.

It is great for feeding and watering, but it's next to impossible to get the chicks out without some of them escaping. The other problem is the poop trays are too close to the wire the chicks are on, and all they have to do is poop once and it's right up against the wire.

I hope yours works better!

I'm going to try to build some brooders like what I had when we lived near Solomon. My hubby designed them and built them, and they were great. Just a couple modifications, and they would be better than great. They were very much like what John Blehm has at his hatchery...

Off to bed I go....

Are Marans more suseptible to heat than other breeds of chickens? It has been pretty hot here lately close to 100 degrees & I lost a young pullet about 4 months old yesterday with no apparent reason. I lost a couple of others awhile back too & it always seems to be the Marans. They have plenty of air flow & are in covered pens with piped in automatic waterers for fresh water all the time. I don't care much for the heat myself & can't imagine what it would feel like to be covered in feathers.

I haven't lost a marans yet to the heat. Knock on wood, I have been two summers with this breed.

This year I lost a Speckled Sussex and a Delaware during our intense summer heat. I was once told that if you get stock from a cold weather breeder that it could take a couple of generations for the bird to get acclimated to your weather. With that being said .... my SS came from Texas and my Delaware came from Oklahoma and BOTH of those states get heat, INTENSE heat, MORE heat than we do in Florida.

CRAP! I'm not a happy camper this morning! My eggs still haven't arrived, and have been in Kansas City for 2 days now

There is no reason for this, but that KC hub is usually the trouble spot with any of my delayed deliveries. I am one pist puppy

I could've driven down to TX and back in far less time than this..
