Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

just a quick question out there for those that are working on bantam Marans...how much are they supposed to weigh....for cockerels, pullets, hens and cocks? And what is the fluctuation allowance for overage and shortage on weight? I know they are not accepted yet, but I'm just curious as I haven't seen much info about the bantams

Thank you all for letting me know how you got into Marans. I made that rookie mistake of moving to 5 acres, thinking ""CHICKENS!""

and heading to my local feed barn and then ordering some from hatcheries. After watching my birds grow and seeing some die I began to wonder what the heck was wrong, none looked like birds I had seen pictures of. Aaanyways, long story short I started researching breeds and egg colors etc and found so much information here. I probably wouldn't show my birds but I would love to have good examples of what the breeds should look like. Right now I have a flock of terrified, bent toed little weirdos, I love them dearly but only a few of my chickens look like they should

I will keep lurking and reading and learning, I love this breed and definitely look forward to posting pictures when I have my own!

I encourage you to visit poultry shows as well. I have found the folks there (exhibitors and judges) to be extremely helpful and friendly - and it's an excellent way to make contact with serious breeders.

Yes I only have one laying so far and the eggs are fantastic!

It is definitely fun learning about the breeds, most people I talk to look at me as if I am crazy

Thankfully I have this forum! I will try and find some poultry show in my area too, that would be fun!

haha shhhhhhhhh!!!! I have a wee side project goin....started it last fall but wasnt sure if it would amount to much....have 4 BCM pullets that are turning out rather well for F1s...no cockerels tho... weighed one this am. they weigh in between 2lbs and 2.4 lbs. not far off then!! they arent laying yet, but plan on putting them in with my original BCM cock thats rather small and see what I can do with them

Just finished counting and I my goal was to get have 80 or less birds for the winter, guess I made it....I have 43. WoooooooWHoooootttt! Now I won't feel bad about the little darlings in lockdown and the eggs under the broody.
