Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

CROWING - - I have made Dh build coops with the idea of installing auto doors so that they can crow their heads off in their enclosed coops and the sound would be muffled. Then after 7 or 8 I would let them out.... Haven't got so far as installing the auto doors yet because we are still working on building the coops. I have one more to go and then auto doors for these boys!

I'm sure he will grow out of it. IF I let him live that long. He really is a handsome fella. And being a BCM and all, I'm trying my best to have patience.
Everyone that went to the fair knew where the chickens were on display. Because of Clyde. Who wouldn't stop crowing. All day long.

Congratulations with your birdies....but I believe that the little cockerel is not a Cuckoo...I don't even think that he is a Marans to be honest with you. Hopefully others will come by with their opinions as well. Be sure to keep us updated on that Blue though.

hey Kim....finally back from work and had dinner...feels good to have another day done.

I'm not sure what to tell you on that boy....who did you say this boy was out of? and where did that Splash boy you thought might be a birchen a while back come from? I am indecisive about him....but it does make me curious if you had any other of his siblings...more specifically cockerels any time this season? How did their hackle color come in if you did?
Think I could come up with any more questions?

This boy is pure Davis.....suppose to be pure Davis anyway. He is out of Gnarles and one of the Black Copper hens from Greenfire Farms, that thus far is not throwing stupid combs. He had a 2 other hatchmates from a different GFF hen and both had comb issues, one was the young cockerel that I posted a couple pages back that I am holding in my hands (I have an updated photo of his comb too before he went to the big house..the freezer

will get that posted too) the other cockerel from that same breeding as the latter had a sprig near the front of his comb on the side. Both of the cockerels I was just talking about had good copper wouldn'tcha know it.

I also have 1 Black Copper pullet from Gnarles and another Black Copper hen from GFF that so far is not showing any signs of comb issues that I can see. She loves when I man handle her to look her over. Her comb is still very small and looks normal right now but we will know for sure in the next month or so when it gets lots bigger. She is just now showing a VERY small amount of copper near her ears.

I have some more photos of all of them but it will take me some time to get them reduced in size and posted.

That Splash boy, Dale, that may have been a Birchen came from Bill and one of Bill's 1st gen. dtrs that was produced from one of my original Davis hens. BTW......spoke with Zanna last night and might be getting that Birchen boy Wednesday night.

Zanna~ If you are out there reading this...and if you don't mind...I will take both of those boys from you. I don't mind watching them grow out. I downsized ALOT and am going to cull 2 more cockerels, so I will have the space for them both and the quaratine pen is all ready to go.

BTW: Sorry if I seemed a little out of it last night when you called Zanna....I was a sleep when I answered the phone. I know better than to do that to..because I get facts all messed up.

Mine crow all day and anytime during the middle of the night if they want to....I love the crowing. It's like music to my ears...unless I am on the phone while I am doing chores.

Still working on this one... She hasn't given me any the last two days.
Which is FUNNY because now my other BCM's are laying real good and she is taking a vacation.

She's being a SLACKER! I think you should have named her Slacker...not Cracker.

Oh, don't get me wrong, I love the crowing. But rules in my town are 6 hens, NO ROOS, and I have around, hmm, 100 birds.
So I am worried Clyde is going to ruin it for everyone.
