I think - improper coloring.


The copper should be more on the reddish side, and not on the front of the neck but instead, the hackles, and should not be black feathers w/colored bordering.

Also the eyes seem dark, and the head seems kinda small/bantam-esque in shape.


Otherwise she's nice.

Here's a few more pics...this one is a pic of three of my girls growing out in the youngest pen... a silver birchen, the gold birchen in the middle, and a blue that had yet to leak copper. I'm not sure if she will or not.

This morning before work I was moving a few things in the garage to get ready to do some painting in there tomorrow and had put the metal ladder out back on the lawn and the chickens were fascinated with it. They came up from the barn and walked around it and jumped up and down on it. It made me laugh watching them act like little kids.

Can you guess which one is the boss in this scenario?

this is one of my favorite girls. I don't know what the camera did to her eye...looks like a light refraction clouding it, but she does have normal Marans eyes. I love her top line!

one of the younger blue girls getting in her copper... she's got quite the nice body she's growing into

one of my birchen boys growing out. The gold leakage has been significantly reduced this generation. I'm looking forward to how they all grow out and how my hatching goes this next year!

a few of the youngest ones eating a treat I brought them. The lavender is my lavender silver Sussex boy...he's getting quite the wealth of silver markings in his hackles and and saddle feathers now.

Really happy to have found this thread. We only have finishing touches left to complete phase 1 of our coop, so we purchased 6 Black Copper Morans yesterday. At least thats what the seller told us they are. He said they are pullets all hatched within 2 months of each other. The forum isn`t allowing me to post pics yet. As soon as I`m able, I`ll post them.

Chances are though they are as claimed. If sellers lie about a breed, it's usually Cuckoo Marans, Rhode Island Whites, Ameraucanas, or Araucanas.

Thanks! The coloring on the birchens have come a long way. When I first started they were very overcolored on the pullets (seems to be a trend with many breeding them) and the boys had major leakage. But, things are turning around nicely. The overcoloring has reduced significantly...the pic of the three girls together (the birchen, gold birchen and the blue girl is one of the most overcolored girls I have from the year's hatch).

Yup...that's Gigantor! He's a sweetie, but is starting to look messy because he's started molting...poor boy. Hopefully he will snap out of it soon. If it doesn't end up raining today I think I will try to get some more photos of the youngest pen. There are some nice girls in there and a few nice looking boys too. I have some large fowl Wyandottes and Sussex in there too growing out, so it gets distracting when trying to focus on just the Marans. Plus I need to see how the birchen pullets are coloring up.
