Yes this is a Carnation comb and it is not only on the males. You will also find that some of the female will have it also. Like was already said I would not keep any of these for breeding to the SOP as it will be a failure and cost a lot of money and headache. It takes a while on the female for it to show up. You can tell on the males at 2-3 weeks.

well yea i appreciate the kean eye lol. I would have just gone on breeding (which i will probably try a batch just to see) thinking it was just his battle wounds. ive got a lady you loves all my culls lol shes an old lady with lots of chickens lol.

Im new to marans they are quite a bit different then cochins and Brahmas.

chevgrl ~ Oh dear, Dave again?? Believe me when I tell you, THAT is a CARNATION comb! Ask me how I know. My first chicks were from him. I have one hen with a full blown carnation, two other hens that carried the gene, and the now deceased hatchmate roo, who didn't express one but also carried the gene for it. Him and his wife Vicki still sell these on ebay, in large amounts, so the already small gene pool is now being heavily infused with this true disqualifying fault! ALL F1s from a test breeding, or should I say the only breeding, of these birds produced hideous carnation combs! Sad too, because I still have a pullet left from this breeding, and she is a beauty...if you don't look at her comb!

Cull them all that you got from him, or anything you bred them to. What a huge waste of my time, money, tears, and hope.

Ok, yet another of my crappy pics, but I woke the poor dears to take this. They were not happy campers! The one with the shaving on the side of the head looks like it's saying: "wow, go to sleep around here, and end up with weird jewelry!"
