You mean other than Marans?

sorry lol i guess i didnt see you name posted under your post. You have any Marans for sale?

haha...that's totally ok...I was just tossing that out there for clarity in case anyone was getting ideas.

I don't have any Marans for sale at the moment. I've thinned down to the breeding stock for the winter on most of my Marans now. My birchens I'm letting grow out some more, but I'm not going to be selling those until I think they are where they should be for others to get a good start in. I raise some other breeds as well, that's why I got confused what you were asking.

Were you planning on coming to the Poultry show the first weekend of Nov in Lincoln?

hey Debbi...got a question...how soon could you tell on your birds that you had a carnation? chevgrl asked earlier but i wasnt sure.

When I first noticed it on the cockerels, I believe it was about 4 weeks? At that point though, I was still trying to learn what to look for. The pullets' combs tend to stay smaller for longer, so it makes it harder. One gal I could see early on, like 8 weeks? After seeing several I can tell you this much; look towards the back end (blade) of the comb. When the combs start to develop, it will look like the comb is ingrown, almost if like you squeezed it, it would pop out. It won't trust me!

But as they age, you will see it come out more and more. Some of the pullets don't fully show till point of lay, and if the comb has flopped over, it may be hidden. The flopped comb is one tell-tale sign I now look for in my pullets!! Believe me when I say, this spreads like wildfire!

I gotta admit that I was totally naive to it until people really started talking about it on here...so it's making me paranoid as it is nearly impossible to tell where people got their stock from originally. Even if someone didn't get them from him how are we to know that people didn't get some from him and start selling them under their own name, or Bev's for that matter. I am on high alert from here on out let me tell you!!

no worries at all Debbi! Its not often I see people with the same spelling for the name so I figured I'd just put it out there to make sure

I suggest that all newbies stay off of ebay, that's where my downfall came. Come here and learn a lot. I can't believe how much I have learned on just this one thread since I've been hee, and I just love the people in here!! That said, I did buy some Silkie eggs on ebay after my Marans debaucle, and had GREAT results! I guess it came from more learning under my belt, and a place to come ask questions, so that I could ask the breeder on ebay. This is truely a great place to learn everything about chickens!

On the good side of my day; I HAVE WATER AGAIN!!!!

Turned out to be what I thought, a hornet had broken the connection in the points! Money spent = $7.00 for another can of hornet spray; glad I could fix it myself? = PRICELESS!!! Yahoo! Now I can shower!

NO kidding! Being a true mother, my mind always strays to the worst case scenarios too!

Thank you Lord!!

Ok, who's the new redhead, chevygrl? I've been typing so fast and taking pics, so I didn't notice!

After reading the last couple of pages I'm almost afraid to post this video of my little guys. Sorry about the lighting but this is the most amount of light this pen gets during the day. I'd love to have any feedback and I know there are no descriptors of individuals. I've already removed one of the guys because of too much copper on his breast and narrow conformation. There's at least three more that will be going soon and I have my favorites picked out.

Don't be afraid Slick, it's how we all learn! And if our goals are to help and improve the breed, this is stuff that needs to come to the forefront. Same deal with horses, dogs, sheep, and I'm sure, cattle. Problem is, you're most likely NOT going to get those folks to admit squat! Been there, done that!

Wish I could do youtube, I'm still on stinkin' dial-up out here!
