Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

This is really depressing to me as I have been watching this thread and I have eggs in the incubator off ebay from a guy named Dave who will not answer my emails when I have asked for his NPIP # and more information on my eggs breeding background. He had advertised them as Wade Jeane line. The picture of his birds looked good but after listening to this thread I looked closer at the picture and one rooster shot does look fishy. I paid a good amount for these eggs.... Is there anyone on here that would sell me decent BCM eggs. Would you PM me as I believe I will be getting rid of any chicks that hatch from these eggs.....

RedBug- It was pretty depressing to find this out! After having so much hope for this young brood. Luckily I do have others that are gorgeous. But now have no rooster and I'm out 3 beautiful looking hens. From now on "are these bird 100% Marans" And do you garuntee they come out with the right comb?" Are going to be my leading questions.

I agree, but if this person is dishonest about their bloodline how could you trust a person to be honest about anything else. Once you have paid and have those eggs all they have to do is not write back. If he was selling his birds as Davis and now he is calling them Wade--what is up with that?? And are his birds NPIP tested?? I try to buy only NPIP tested bird eggs and usually the person selling me the eggs sends me their number for my records. I was wondering why this person would not get back to me when I wrote to him.....

ok so what i want to know is if my roosters are good enough of marans to sell their offspring in the coming spring in my area.
I am the only one in the area with this breed and the other color variants... the hens are either BCM leg feathered and the blue bircheren are splashes.
I don't intend to sell as show quality just as a chance to have more variety in my area... otherwise we get what feed stores get.... and that is boring.

pics of my marans roosters are on the previous page....

If I learned one thing, don't buy on ebay! It's tempting, but not worth the time or the wasted money. Just because you ask all the right questions doesn't mean they will answer truthfully.

What variety pf marans are the first 2 boys? Id comment but I'm still learning and I would probably give you bad advice

the first boy is a silver birchen...the second appears to be a sport of some sort. Perhaps Illia will be able to say what kind?

the first 2 boys are supposed to be Blue Bircheren if i remember the egg labels said BB.... they are brothers.. its funny how genetics are expressed. the females turned out white with random blue feathers.

sounds like your girl is a splash. Genetics indeed can do crazy things and can hide under the surface for a while before it shows. That second boy is not a blue birchen...the coloring is off...hence being a sport.

The second boy is not one I would use for breeding at all, the first one has potential, but will need time to grow. Do you know what color of eggs he came out of? He might make the start of a good project, if he fills in nicely and keeps a nice comb, but the birchen lines need some significant work. I would give yourself the time to track down some good girls to put with him and take your time. At the least I'd test mate with him to check out what he throws thoroughly before offering them for sale. There is no way to know whether he will breed true or not or if he is hiding something on you unfortunately.

i just figured i didn't wing the genetic lotto.... the one real bircheren looking roo might still have blue recessive somewhere in him and if the splash hens are any use i can try.... otherwise i can recross him with my blue andulsians to try and bring the blue out. my 2 blue hens throw blue over 50% of the time and oddly enough the males are blacker and females more blue. just figured i could try and put more blue genes in.
I have noticed that the "blue birchen's" do not have leg feathering so i assume they are somewhere decended from the english import while Poirot is a real french copper marans.
