here are a few thoughts:

first the exotic animal release is very sad... but made me wonder at the sight of seeing wolves, tigers, lions, bears and other carnivors running out and about together.... would they all just be happy at freedom or be interested in shredding each other? i mean they arn't "wild" and none ever interact in the "wild" so oddly i consider it a twisted experiment and wish i saw footage of it.

second thought: how hard do you think it would be to map the chicken genome? (or has it been done?) i "might" be getting a research job here at college to look into the genetics of a special apple tree at my orchard. but i was wondering if on the side running some chicken tissue of different breeds. the professor that has interest in my apple tree's genes is the one who mapped the entire apple genome (i would love to map the pear genome, more complex).... i mean the meat and egg industry probably mapped this out but what about just for breeds as a type of 'germplasm' bank? maybe i am just too excited about possibly contributing to a transgenic apple, but hey, i would love to create my own apple. i love toying with the idea of turning off or on certain dormant genes in chickens to make them more 'dino' ish.

i know langshans have heavily influenced the development of many breeds today... and they are part of what helped found the marans stock. no harm no fowl...

i don't understand all the details to genetics but just have fun watching it in action or knowing how to manipulate them.. like just do and ask the how and why later. thats the fun of science...

Aww that's such a cute story. My best hen, Cheepa, (the one who lays eggs like my avatar) almost didn't make it as a chick either. She was really really tiny and weak and couldn't stand. In retrospect, I think my bator temps were running way too low and I didn't realize it at the time. Anyhow, I hand fed her and she had to be separtated from the others until she got stronger. Once she caught up she was a little pistol and very healthy. She still isn't a really huge hen but very pretty and my darkest layer. Thank goodness she made it.

Here she is with her little bear. She loved that darn bear so much that I had to put it in with her when I moved her in with the other chicks. THen she would stand on the bear's lap and attack any other chick that would get near it LOL!

You'd be surprised at how that primal instinct can come back in a hurry. According to the news, one of the big cats ate one of the monkeys, so that should say something. They were also in a very stressful state too, so the "flight or fight" instinct from the adrenals kicked in, that's why they had to kill them. It's very sad, but a frightened animal will do what it has to to survive, and this all could've had some very tragic endings if they hadn't done what they did. I feel sad for the police that had to take them out too, that had to be hard to do..
