Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Hey Miss ANNA! where have you been? I need to chat with you about the show this weekend and the possibility of the Cuckoos and etc. I have an update for you after looking them over pretty carefully and just wanted to make sure I get in touch with you before I pack up my birds that i've already reserved for people to buy and etc.

Don, I'm just asking for clarification - it was raised due to the judges commenting at Crossroads that they'd like to see heavier shank feathering. Just wanting confirmation, that's all. There are two good shank feathering pictures on the SOP thread - hoping that Edgar Mongold will take a look & confirm (or deny?) that these are still what we should be looking for in our stock.

Okay, when I said rounded like a parrot's head I was looking at the fact that most of the parrots I've seen have a little bit of a flat top, and discarding the beak, look a little longer from front to back but not like say, a peacock (said because the neighbor's peacock is currently perched in my mulberry tree and screaming at my dogs, very loudly

). The beak should have a gentle curve to it that balances the head out while not dropping quickly like that seen in some parrot varieties or sticking straight out like the aforementioned peacock (who may disappear if he doesn't stop yelling every 3 minutes at my dogs

). Can anyone give me an assessment on head shape and size for the chick in my avatar pic? All these SOPs and so many ways to interpret

Wynette, If you would like I can take a picture of one of my boys in next couple of days showing just the shank feathers. They are what is wanted. Let me know.

No way anyone can look at a baby chick and tell if it has a good head SOP wise. If the egg has higher humidity the chick will be oversize causing an untrue type look. Give the chicks a little time and see what they develop into down the road.

Don, yes PLEASE! Would you post them on the SOP thread, though? I would love to pull together, eventually, some kind of "pamphlet" or something that has pictures of these points of contention so we have a true-life example to view!!
