Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

I have a pea combed ameraucana roo who is not pure, ie could have a bit of mille fleur and buff orpington in him (I hatched him from a light green/blue egg that came from a neighbour who has lots of different breeds).
I also have several pure breed black copper marans hens that I would like to mate with the roo. What are the chances of producing an olive egger?
be interested to hear your thoughts peeps

There is actually an Olive Egger thread that might be of more help. They have some good info there and some experts to get certain colors too

Sounds to me like the roo may already have Green egg genes so adding a Marans to the mix would give you darker greener eggs... IF he carries the blue egg gene. Good luck!

I finally got a Computer. Went to church this morning... got pulled into the office. Thought i was in trouble only to be handed a new laptop computer.

I raise primarily Birchens and they are not nearly as far as the BCMs in egg color. I've heard of people having Birchens that lay super dark eggs, the only problem is that no one has been able to produce photos of the eggs. I also had to learn the hard way getting into the Birchens first with my Marans is that the egg color is exaggerated, because I have yet to get eggs as dark as the ads claimed. This doesn't mean you can't set up a program to work on the egg color tho.

There were Birchen eggs at Crossroads virtually indistinguishable from the Black Coppers. I took some pictures. I'll see if I can dig one up that shows it clearly.

Well congratulations, on the lap top. Gotta love those surprised. Thought you were in trouble huh? I would have thought the same thing. Glad to know I'm not alone in that regards. I wish you many happy hours telling me all about Marans.

I'm asking about Birchens cuz I scored some chicks on an auction and wondered what they were like. Yes I do know I probably should have checked it all out, but I don't have any and they are rarer. At least that's what Green Fire claims.

Gotta run,

Vicki- he had money and saw everything in dollar signs. But he did replace all the chicks and turkeys so that was nice but it sucks to have to start over.

I hate to kill a dog, any dog... but if it came to that and with coons & fox I shoot to kill just @ their presence.

Lol I always think I'm in trouble everytime I get drug into the church office and I've never really been in trouble. Bt I have gotten counseled I'm a single mother and all so they think I need alittle more guidence. I have needed a computer for a long time. I can't wait to be able to restart my spread sheets on my Marans breeders. This note book picture thing is quite a lot of work.

Wish I could help you in reguards to your birchens but I'm not on top of that game or any marans game for that matter HAHA! I'm just learning. But vicki and kim got a lot of knowledge on the subject. I Thank God those two are on here!
