I didn't use Purina for a long time either, but had so many people mention the flockraiser and decided I'd try it and my birds have responded really well on it. I can get it from the local coop for almost 3 bucks cheaper a 50 pound bag than TSC, but thought I'd see what I could do. The layer I use is private label and not labeled as Purina, but is indeed made by Purina which my birds have done great on. I was surprised to find that out. I wonder if it makes a difference that the feed is picked up weekly by the local coop...

Hope all are aware that Purina does no longer put meat scraps in their chicken feed. I believe it is a must to have the meat as part of their ration.

yup...i am aware...i supplement the feed with several things and my birds are in great shape.

Mel, you're making me really jealous with the description of your place. Only I'd want black bass and channel cats in that pond.

Thanks Debbi, that's good to know. I was hoping I could get by with a community type nesting box instead of compartments. I'm a lousy carpenter and this will make it much easier on me.

I need to put some bass in there to eat down the small bluegill. I also have huge Koi in there and one 5 foot long sturgeon. I'm waiting for one of the neighborhood kids to hook that sturgeon on their little bluegill rod. The kids sneak in and fish when they think I'm not looking but really I watch them with my binocs. They have a regular path worn into the pond and where they scoot under the barbed-wire fence there are often shreds of clothing..It's AWESOME!

Just wait till that Sturgeon takes them for a swim!

Sounds like what I woulda done as a kid. You might want to have milk and cookies waiting on them one day. That would give them a WTH moment.

You know eventually someone will end up in the pond! As skeptical of people in general these days as far as litigation goes, I think I'd put up a Game Cam for your benefit.

Check the temperature too...this black chick that shows the short down indicates perhaps the temps may have been just a little too high. I've been doing a lot a reading since I had to cull those 2 Welsummer chicks due to unaborbed or rough navel. Don suggested that I check the temps and I did and he was right.....and I have adjusted it. (Thank you Don! ) Will see how the hatch with the Birchens comes out.

guess what!? I'm down to under a 100 on my own stock! Still working on thinning out my dad's, but making great progress! I'm so excited!! I'm gonna have to do a birchen line up set of photos once I get everyone culled down. None of them are perfect obviously, but I have a rough plan of who to mate to who to give me the best results I can...It will be a good year!
