Buddy Henry's farm was in Tennessee last I know, but the site is gone. He is a member here - goes by "Wheaties" - I don't know him, but I thought he was a pretty well - known breeder.

Hello!!
I am not expert on the Black Copper Marans or even the Partridge Plymouth Rocks, but I not to long ago thought about adding the partridge rocks and They are a very nice breed. my friend has them. She has 16 hens and 3 roosters and they are beautiful. decent layers straight thru winter and are very good mothers. she said she has a few hens that she gets an egg a day from but mostly they lay every other day. With this said if you are trying to choose between the 2 then egg color would be the deciding factor. both breeds if raised right are very friendly and beautiful. I choose the fbcms myself because they are beautiful and you just cannot beat those beautiful rich chocolate colored eggs. Good luck in deciding..Just remember with both breeds it is going to take much research, as i am still reading! The plymouth rocks will more than likely have to mature 1 year then after their first molt you can choose your breeders.. who have the best penciling. thats the only down fall to this breed..it takes so long for the mature feathers to come in to get the best breeders. this site has alot of useful info and wonderful people who will help out.

It is my understanding that he was a pretty well known breeder and had some nice birds. Berkeleysprings has birds from his stock. Maybe Randy (Berk) might stop by and grace us with a few photos of his lovely wheatie ladies.

Wow, cute little buggers! I thought chick #1 and #6 might have been a little lighter than the others. But its hard to tell from this side of the Computer :)

Pink, I notice the color sticky banding. If you dont mind me asking, what does it pertain to?

Thanks Paul! I think they are all black and possibly I was doing some very wishful thinking as they were hatching and drying out. I think Raven got all the blue ones.

The sticky banding is vetwrap and I use it for identification purposes, hobbling if someone has splay leg and for medical treatments on the birds. I love vetwrap!
These babies are tagged so I can keep track of them. Today I am going to make a guess as to gender on all of them, then will watch to see how close I am to my notes. I know nothing of these birds or history and their parentage, *(though I am told they are of Bev's lines) so I am interested to see how the gender traits that every bird has shows in these chicks and how they mature. The vetwrap will expand with them as they grow for a couple of weeks and then I can change it if need be. I like it tons and tons better than those little spiral chick bands, they are horrible IMO.

Me too Vicki, it's cold and gray here this morning, haven't ventured outside yet, and I can hear old Clyde telling me off!

Pink ~ Who'd of thunk it? All blacks?? Cute little buggers.

That Buddy Henry roo that is supposed to be a Splash, looks more like a Black Tailed Buff (sort of), or a very poorly colored, overly colored Wheaten. Better pics needed for sure.
