I haven't gone to the link, but, you may want to divide it up as to what folks want. IE: SOP birds/flock, or just dark egg layers. Too many now are selling birds that would be DQed from showing, but may lay darker eggs. If you just want to keep them in your backyard and get eggs, that's one part. If you want show/breeder potential birds/eggs, that lay at least a minimum #4 dark egg, that could be another catagory. Folks would have to find a copy of the SOP and adhere to it for show quality prospects. So sad that many of them don't know what they have, even after breeding for many years...supposedly. Especially hard when you try to break it down further into different color varieites; so many know so little. Good luck.

Can you make a list for wanna be marans breeders? Or could you post again in a year? I would love to add my name but...sigh I am not yet a marans breeder.

overmelanized is when a bird is too dark. For example, when a black copper or blue copper hen shows no coppering on their neck. It is because they are overmelanized.

Gold Leakage usually refers to the birchen varieties. A birchen should have silver markings regardless of whether it is a blue or a black. In some cases a male will carry one copy for silver and one copy for gold. You can tell when a bird has some gold mixed in with the silver. It is referred to as gold leakage. I can show you a pic as an example. This boy should have only silver markings.

An over melanized hen of the Black Copper variety would be one that shows all black in the hackles, or very little coppering. The roosters will have more of a dark, mahogany coloring in the hackles, and some may or may not show the same in the saddle feathers. Here is a pic of a "dark" , overmelanized roo. He is in a bright light situation here, so the hackles look lighter in color. Look at his saddle feathers to see the actual color of the hackles. Both are a mahogany color.

thanks for supplying a pic Debbi...I didn't have one handy to post with the overmelanization. I didn't figure Gigantor would fit that bill very well. Maybe after my family leave I'll be able to hunt around for my usb memory card adaptor so I can load pics from my good camera for you of more stock. I don't know where it went...hopefully it just got set down somewhere and I'll find it after the chaos
