He did not determine the ratio of chicks......I used that as an example from some information I got off line about autosomal recessive and its inheritance.

Ahhh...I sees! I must have been reading too fast haha. I have to run now, but I'm really curious about all this. I love science when its practical stuff like this!
 
Ok, now explain this. Why are some Carnations smaller than others?? JR's comb is pretty compared to Muttley's! Would JR's be one recessive and one defective? If Muttley has two defective genes at play, is this the difference in the size and form of the comb?? Or, is it because Muttley got 2 defective genes from both parents? I don't see that as being the case. The dad had a single comb, so let's assume he had a recessive gene. The mom has a Carnation, so she had the 2 defective genes already present in her? Now I'm starting to feel like a genetic idiot!

Greetings all,

I have a rooster that looks like a copper marans but it has yellow featherless legs and is very agressive. I'm using am iPod touch & not quite sure how to post pics using it. From the description, can someone tell me if it is in fact one? Thanks!

Ok, here is a picture that I can see in my mind without using the genetic terms! Use this to see what I'm talking about here. Correct me if I'm still seeing this wrong!! Sorry for the Sire/Dam scene, my brain is still hung in the dog world!

= defective recessive gene

Two genes come from EACH parent. So here is what I am seeing here with my birds:

Frist breeding: Sire =

Results: all 4 chicks hatched had carnation combs,

KEY: Sire had normal single comb, as did Dams 1 & 2. Dam 3 has a Carnation comb

Here are my babies!!! I hatched 4 black coppers, 1 blue copper and one wheaten! 6 chicks is super awesome hatch rate for shipped eggs for me (2 dz eggs)
One started pipping on day 20. By the next morning 1 had 2 chicks. I had to go to work and when I got home that night there was 5 total. I checked through the window and no more pips so I snuck the 5 chicks out and put them in the brooder thinking that was my total. I left the incubator on and running of course for stragglers and guess what... my lil blue copper hatched some time in the middle of the night! yay!! Blue copper is the color I really want so I am super excited! Here is an iphone snapshot. I will take more pics later when they fluff up a little better.

keeping a key of what color dye went with what hen number or color band.
