Must be nice, Donna!

It was 5 degrees toDAY - know how much easier my chores would be, if it only went below freezing at night time!!

Our typical winters (this NOT being one!) stay below freezing from Dec to March/April!!

I don't see why taking away the water at night wouldn't work for your adult birds, though!
Once they're up on the roosts, they can wait until morning for a fresh drink,

That would be the easiest and least expensive, if it only gets that cold once in a great while where you live! (Any openings for COLD visitors? Say about February?

So...just have to share some pullet eggs I've collected the last couple of days. The white one is a sussex egg for reference. I am pretty happy with the color considering how cold its been...and....and...considering they are from project pens...like birchens (yes...birchens) and blue coppers and splash coppers. There are a couple of Black Coppers in there too, but what do you guys think? I'm soooo stinking happy! I'm making progress!

It can get below freezing for several days in a row, day and night. Two years ago after we bought the farm, haha, it got to 0 for several days and our pipes burst.... $400 water bill too....

This is a mild winter for us too. It is going to be in the 50's during the days for a little while. That is good for me since this is my first winter with chickens. I forgot to add... we have the nipples in the chicken barn too and we used the electric heated wire stuff and that seemed to work... except where we didn't have it

or insulation on it

some hot water worked to fix the frozen pipe (about 2 ft)

Visitors welcome... if you like barns

first i'm not sure what a "backed" potato would be doing in an incubator...

And what is a "Backed potato"?!

these pics are pretty dang close to what I see in person in terms of tone (the redness). I used one of my art lights because it is the most accurate coloring for when I photograph my work. The only thing that it does is wash some of the depth of the color.
I'm confused about what you are saying your egg color is...do you mean yours are more brown? or...? I'm confused

Finally got around to taking some pics of this little cockerel now that he's older (5 weeks). He came from a breeding of two blue copper Marans. I don't know exactly which pullet was his mother, but 2 of the 3 pullets I had in with the cockerel had a lot of excess copper color on their breasts. So do you all think this guy (I think it's a guy

) is just an overly red blue copper? Or something else? Notice the whitish tips on some of the feathers on his back.

Here he is looking all freaked out from being plunked down in a wheelbarrow:

haha way too funny. I just had to tease ya!

I do find it pretty interesting to see people's eggs on here, because how different they look. I am just so stinking thrilled with the work starting to show its paying off in the deepening of color. You would not even believe the place I started in with some of these varieties! I'm loving the consistency across the board.... Its kind of making me a bit weepy... yes...I'm a total nerd.

Don't cry on the eggs... the color might come off.

The other day, my Mother was washing some Marans eggs to eat and she told me "This is all just crut (her word) on here it washes off if you scrub it!" that is when the splanin' started
