Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

They just make me smile.

I've changed my gender guess to 2 males and 3 females. I believe the pink banded one and the chick front and center are males. The one in the front has the heaviest shank/toe feathering and nice long toes.

Oh boy! I guessed right before I read the answer. Based on the upright stance, but that's likely not going to work all the time. :weee

Good Morning :frow

Just wanted to post a recent Black Copper Marans picture....Darkest we've seen in a very long while. Definitely made me smile. Scuse the grainy picture - cell phone made a better pic with hubby's diggie.....Natural daylight pic.....Will post less grainy one later!

Dark egg!!!! I have a girl that lays an egg that is really dark on one end.... but she runs out of paint 1/3 of the way down the egg.... but not that dark! I have to get me some of those really dark egg layers.

It was suggested that I post this question here:

Below are pictures of some of my Birchen roosters that are showing a fairly dramatic difference in coloring, despite all being from Greenfire Farms stock.
One is just black/green with silver, one is black/green with silver and a wheat-gold, and one is black/green with a brassy gold. Can anyone tell me what is
going on? Are these three different strains?

This guy below has silver hackles and a wheat-gold saddle.

And this guy below is really, really brassy. What's up with this? They are from the same hatch.

Your first boy is a silver birchen, which means he carries two copies of silver. The other boy that is extremely gold, is a gold birchen with two copies of gold, the other boys that are not as gold are boys that more than likely have a split for gold and silver.
My main focus in the Marans are birchens and I don't keep the boys that have two copies of gold. I do however sometimes use the boys that carry a copy of each. It will take a bit of work to get where you want to be, but if they have superior body type and etc to the silver boy you have, it might be worth it. How old are these boys?

oh....and do you think that you can get a close up of the comb on that silver boy in the first pic? Particularly on the back part of the comb.

Thanks! I love the coloring on the split ones. The light, wheat gold color is really beautiful.
I agree with you about the double gold. It's just not very attractive at all.

These guys range from 6 months to a year.

Can you see the comb any better in this shot? I may have to get a close up.

I appreciate the help!

I've been lurking here for a while. I bought hatching eggs from a BYCer and have 6 Black Copper Marans chicks. They do have feathered feet. They are 3 weeks old and I can't tell if they are boys or girls.... PinkChick, can you stop by? I'm amazed that you can sex your babies already! And my aren't they cute!! I keep thinking that they are ALL Roos (heaven help me). I haven't been able to upload pictures since they changed the system over. I will give it another try so that maybe one of you can help me out with gender. Thanks!
