Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Ok, just have to make my presence know

I am back from Newnan.... Came home with some Golden Cuckoo Marans eggs by accident.... 2 doz German NH eggs and 4 chicks too and Wheaten Am eggs and Partridge Rock eggs and 2 little Good Shepard Barred Rock roos. I think that was all I got..... OH a Blue Wheaten Am Roo too.

I put my eggs in lockdown yesterday... I still have some of Pinkchicks eggs in there too, but I don't have any real hope for them at this point. But they are not hurting anything so they stay till this hatch is over.

Raven1 Marans are still laying like crazy... I have tons of eggs for the new bator. They broke one today and started to devour it and in my rush to save the other 2 I dropped 1

so I looked to see if they were fertile and they still are... I have had them 14 days now and still fertile... the science project continues.

The new bator is up and running to get to temp. I don't think it is going to have any problem getting to temp or staying there. Tomorrow I will start to fill it..... SLOWLY.... I can't handle all the chicks hatching at one time. Not really sure I can handle it over several weeks either

But I need so many of these babies. I bet with the eggs I took to Newnan and didn't get to sell and the ones I was saving and the ones I am still collecting, I have over 12 doz eggs

I just can't do that many. AND I have 17 SLW eggs to be shipped on Tuesday.

Haha...once I get goin in the season...the 40 isn't so bad...I'm just rusty! Good luck with the eggies!! How was Newnan? See lots of people you know from here or see lots of Marans?

I meet a few people from BYC, lots of Marans eggs and Marans, well lots relative to other breeds anyway, Bev Davis was there... Did not get to see the ones being shown they were being judged for a long time.

that's too bad that you didn't get a chance to see how the ones shown were lookin! I always love looking to see how judges mark birds and etc. Sounds like you had a good time and brought home lots of treasures!

I had everything planned ahead except the golden cuckoos. That was a nice surprise! Left the show only $67 in the hole

Mornin everyone! Still have a lovely headache that's making it hard to sleep, but works out alright for checkin on chicks in the hatcher through the night. I'm up to 33 chicks now out of 40!!! So I have 7 left that I'll leave them and see how they do....I am surprised every time another hatches!

Got up before sunrise this morning, and looked out back at the coop. I see this large, black thing right near the gate to the run!

In my pre-coffee stupor, I'm thinking BEAR!!!!!! Just about to go get the rifle, but rubbed my eyes one more time, only to see my big, black WHEELBARROW!!

What a doofus I am! I had forgotten all about the interuption I had in the middle of laying some straw in the run. Two guys came to pick up some odd scrap and junk! Glad I didn't shoot my wheelbarrow, it was expensive!

I looked for pics last night of the golden marans and boy they are pretty. Much like a barred butterscotch cockerel I have. Donna , stop tempting into another breed/variety!

I can't handle what I have NOW.

He was an escapee along with another girl a couple of months back and got along so well with everyone I just left them til they got a bit of size on them to make up my mind about whether they would be good enough to use. The nice part of it is that he is a really nice cuckoo, way better than his papa Claude in body type, patterning an tail set! I'll give him some of his own girls and see what he gives me

Yeh, you know I would've felt like an idiot shooting my wheelbarrow! We do have Black Bears here, although I haven't seen one for quite a few years now. I don't like bears at all! Glad he is a nice Cuckoo boy. For some reason, the Cuckoos don't appeal to me. I kind of find that strange, since my long time favorite chooks were Barred Rocks?

Guess my tastes have changed over the years. Get rid of that headache and feel better!!
