Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Thank you Debbi! I don't think we will be seeing the sun here for several days to come. It has been torrential rains here. Last night it sounded like we were sleeping in a dishwasher.

You can't get black from that combo ....

LOL! I know and I had a brain infarction! What I meant was these little babies are products of Blue Coppers crossed to Blue Coppers and those Blue Coppers were produced from Blue Copper and Splash Copper parents/grandparents. No Black Coppers in the background of the birds that I am currently using for these eggs.(I should say...the birds that I am using I didn't produce from Black Coppers....they were all products of Blue) I got rid of all Black Copper stock with the exception of one Gnarles' daughters and she is just now being tested to Lil' Bill, several of her eggs are set for hatch on the 29th so we will see if any of them have short down issues and stupid comb issues. BLECH!!!! I hate the comb issues!!! I don't even want to see another stupid comb. I'll scream and pull my hair out if I do...I swear it!

My guess is it is something that only follows the black gene and maybe you need two copies to show IDK?

Good thought! I will keep my eyes peeled on the only Black Copper girls eggs in the 'bator. I am growing out a Black Copper cockerel produced from Lil' Bill so it will be interesting to put this hen with him when he is older if he is worthy of breeding to see if the short down happens in their offspring.

Blues carry one copy of black, so maybe with 2 copies making the black coppers it shows.... We will do some testing. Since I have you boys they carry one black... I will test her with them and see it we get all blacks with funky feathers. AND I will grow up an Unrelated Blue roo and test her with him too. Want to send me more eggs in a couple of weeks? So I can have more to work with.

Since I don't really know genetics... I think the black is just masked by the blue so they all really have it I think. Village needs to chime in here and help us

I can send you more eggs but it will be a while before I can.....I have many chick orders to fill. For some reason nobody else in the state of WA wants to let go of any of their Marans or folks tell me the other are flaking out. I have been swamped with calls and requests.

Sure enjoyed all the pictures of the chicks. They are just beautiful. I am getting 5 chicks tomorrow...all kinds. No Marans. :( Was looking at pictures of marans on line, and accidentally got the name wrong and looked up Malay chickens. I would love to have one of them...you would get a chuckle just looking at them. I had a turkey named Gomer who use to do that for me. He was very funny. He would come when I called him, and would get going so fast, flapping his wings he could barely stop, and would end up over on his breast. Funny guy.

Kim! Congrats on the chickers!! So exciting!

Marcia! I'm so sorry....I'm working on an email back to you. Its been a rough week or two for me here in several ways

Debbi! I have an email I need to send to you too

The chicks here are growing like weeds already and are endlessly entertaining. One thing is for sure...they have healthy appetites!!

At your leisure Vicki.

Well, I never got to play with the camera today. While it got sunny later in the afternoon, the wind was whipping around at about 35-40mph! I HATE wind!

Evidently, so do the chooks, they all headed into the woods. Luckily, they all made it back tonight and were more than ready to go inside!
