Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Be brave, Vicki!

For the biggest decisions (or hurdles) in my life, I always felt Waayyy better once I had a plan!

I take forEVER to make a decision, but, once I'm in, I'm IN!
Just received our confirmation for our first foster care meeting!!

BWalden - people seem to have different luck with shipped eggs, depending, particularly, it seems on which hub they pass through.
I, myself, haven't had much luck with shipped eggs, though my home eggs hatch really well.

From what I've read, you should let shipped eggs sit a couple days before setting, and some people recommend not turning them for the first several days, in hopes that all the scrambled parts and pieces, particularly the air cell, can reconsolidate.

For candling, you need a high powered light to see much, other than the darkness.
I figure, as long as the "darkness" is growing, we're making progress!!

thanks Katelyn. I'm trying to think it all out and make educated decisions that will propel me forward, precisely because of what you said. Once I'm in, I'm ALL in, in pretty much anything I do, so with all that I'm sorting out now...I figure, being prepared is my only course of action first.Everything else will fall in place after that for me. I don't do well with just being all willy nilly. I'm a strategist by nature, its just how my brain works, but that doesn't mean I don't take risks. I have some people in my life that think I'm insane because of things I've done in the past.

I am SOOO excited for you guys about the foster care meeting. I really hope it works out smoothly for you guys! I think you will do great! By the way, my friend just moved last week about 2 hours south of you. The one I told you about. If she is going stir crazy and having animal withdrawls I might send her your way

Don't worry - out of a dozen, I'd hope you would get a few!!
I guess I'm spoiled with 11 out of 12 hatching at home!

I think my PO plays soccer with my boxes!
(seriously though, the boxes usually look like they did okay. Beat up on the corners or a little smushed, but not totally squashed.)

Thanks!!
We're really excited!!
The wheels roll slowly, but I have summers off-what better to do than raise kids on a farm in the summer sunshine!?

Make sure you take some R&R and don't stress yourself sick(er) -it will all fall into place!!
And GOOD LUCK!

Send your friend right up!! any time!! (and come with her!)

I have the chickens, guineas, 7 goat kids and their mommas, pigs, and my horses here at the home farm.
The home farm is 20 acres of virgin land that is fighting us tooth and nail, so going is slow...

Then @120 head of cattle (beef) and their expected babies, steers, @75 Spanish meat goats and their expected babies, and various ages of pigs at the big farm! (350 acres)

No matter what animal fix she needs-we probably have something!
(and plenty of manure, if she misses mucking! LOL!)

Thanks!!

she also loves kids and is great with them. So if you ever need a babysitter and you're in a crunch she'd be great. I'd love to go out to see her and come up and meet you too! Its not out of the realm of possibility

She is working with a missions organization for the next 2 to 3 years or so, so it is possible!

Awesome!
Please do let her know she's welcome any time!
Give her my contact info, in case she ever needs anything.
And you, too!
(Everyone needs a vacation!!)

Family friends are missionaries.
Such a great thkng to do!

I think they're in Africa now?
They left as newlyweds, right out of college.

He teaches and she raises the family.
Last I heard, she was pregnant with their sixth child!!

They love the community and lifestyle and come "home" to visit often, but go right back.
Now THAT is brave!

where did they go to school if you don't mind me asking? My bachelor's degree was in cross cultural communications with an emphasis in missions. I still try to do short term missions when I can, I love it, but my heart really is in having a farm. Most all of my closest friends are missionaries overseas or work in non profit fields here in the states. The rest of my friends are crazy animal lovers/farmers or artists. Makes for a fun combo since not often do all of those things intersect seamlessly.

I sure will let her know. She's already asked me to come visit sometime this year, if it works out, we'll come up to see ya! I'd love to see what you guys have going over there....sounds like lots of fun!

They met at Cornell undergraduate.
He got a big business degree and realized, towards the end, that his heart was in teaching and working with kids.

I don't remember what her degree was in-??-
she stays home to raise all their kids these days.
6 kids is a career in itself (and no vacation or sick days!!)

Im not sure how they ended up on a mission, but they love the work and the lifestyle!
their kids are still young, but so well rounded (and well traveled!)

Oo! I forgot-I have a long-awaited foal arriving, hopefully, end of May, too!!

C'mon up!
Take home some goats!(please!)

All the farm work keeps me out if trouble and keeps me sane!!
we both have full time jobs, so progress is slow, but steady!

Awesome! I love hearing stories like that. I keep telling myself if I could pull off doing missions from the day I turned 19 and went on my first trip, survived a year long internship, 6 years of college, live in New Zealand and travel overseas multiple times to different countries for missions trips..then I can probably figure out what my next steps here could be. Its funny the things you do when you are younger and don't even bat an eye that it those things might be difficult. I just gotta remind myself. The best part of all of this is that I'm back in my roots...raising poultry. Makes my heart so happy.

I would love to take some goats off your hands. I love goats! We'll have to see if I can sort out a time to come see both my friend and you! Just depends on sorting out those pesky things called details.
