Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Does anyone know how to get ahold of Helen Byers in Texas. Or if she is on BYC? I bought some blue Marans eggs off of eBay from her last year and want more. Also, would be interested in some Bev Davis bloodline blues if anyone has them and the eggs are good color. I've bought several sets of B/B/S eggs and so far Helen's have been by far the darkest and most reasonable.
Thank you,

Emily

I believe she belongs to the Marans group MCCusa and maybe Marans of America, they might have contact info. Don

I can't keep up with this thread! LOL We have our first maran eggs hatching today. I am so excited!!!! We have a few blue splash, a few golden salmon, and a few cuckoo maran. The blue splash and the cuckoo parents are all feather foot so I am hoping for some little feather foot babies. Only 13 of the 14 eggs went to the hatcher, next week we will have 24 more schedualed to hatch. I now need to read up on what traits to look for in the off-spring so I know what to keep and what to cull.

Congrats on the new chicks! First of all, welcome to the thread. Second, and a huge pet peeve for me and something you need to know, the breed name is MARANS. Always with the S on the end, whether you are speaking of one bird or 100 birds! They are named for the town of Marans, France where they originated. Ok, off my soap box

Go back through this thread and other Marans threads here on BYC, and you will find a wealth of information!! And of course, we love pics!!! Anything from cute chicks to critiques of older birds. Some people take offense to critques, as we call them like we see them here, so if you are trying to breed toward the SOP, you would be wise to take the advise of the breeders. If you just want to show pics of pretty birds, that's ok too, just make sure to say you don't want a critique! We are all trying to get this breed to a more uniform standard, so it can get frisky in here at times. Don't be afraid, and don't be afraid to ask questions!! Like a family that tussles from time to time, we are all friendly and come back together! Welcome aboard!! Enjoy the babies, they grow so quickly!!

LOL I was just reading up on the history of Marans and realized the whole "s" thing, haha. I will have to post pics once we have them. We have someone hatching our eggs for us until we build an incubator. Hubby is handy that way but he has to have the time to devote to a project like that. I have been keeping him busy building coops instead, lol. I can't wait to see what hatches from our stock of Marans, they are so pretty. I wasn't happy with our Golden Salmon boy so I have him in reserve and bought a better looking one a few weeks ago. I won't see the results of his breeding for a few more weeks yet but excited to see if that changes things up. I love my little blue splash pair but I only have the one pair. How do you go about finding more breeding stock? Would it be okay to breed our blue splash roo to his own offspring? I mean I don't have this issue with my black copper or my cuckoos because I can find those locally for breeding but we just started with the Blue Splash.

thanks

I've got a question for all you Marans breeders with wade jeane lines-
I asked them if they have ever gotten a bird with smooth legs and they said no. They never had that happen to them ever.
So, do your(Wade jeane) birds ever hatch out a chick with smooth legs? I've had a friend who bought her birds from my dark eggs and never had an outside flock introduced. But had some chicks hatch out with smooth legs. We asked them on darkeggs and they just said cull the birds. they didn't have any explanation.

Thanks

I don't have any pure WJ lines but supposedly one roo, and he won't breed, so can't tell you with any great certainty...BUT! An old adage.."Never say Never" comes to mind. I have people also tell me they have NEVER had any comb problems as well, then when the chicks hatch I got Carnation combs?? Take it with a grain, or a pound, of salt!
