Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Looks better in those pics. Just keep an eye on her. I may be waaaaay off here, but I don't want you to go through what I did!! I'm thinking I found another carnation today in my blue pullet from the last Marans hatch. These girls are small for their age, and this is the one with the badly bent toes. She has that ingrown look on the last point and blade area. She was going to the layers only pen anyway because of her toes, but this just squelched it for me. These from someone who "had never had a problem with combs!". Hmmm, out of 5 birds I hatched; one cockerel had a carnation, one cockerel had a sprig, and now this possible carnation in this pullet!

So far, the Splash girl looks the best. Her Blue Copper brother looks decent too at this point, but I'm not sure now if he should stay here either. I am really sick to death of this comb crap!!

trust me...I'll be watching everything I hatch like a hawk. My goal is to tighten up my breeding pens and keep smaller flocks of each color variety. So, this season is really going to be about watching everything and cut down...will be easier on me and my pocketbook

That's what I'm going to do too. Smaller flock, best of what I have, cull the rest. Not even sure I want the cull hens here for just eggs. It's just me here, I can only eat so many eggs, it will lessen my feed bill yet some more, and there won't be any reason to sweat putting who with whom once I get it all boiled out! My breeders will also be my layers; eat some, hatch some. Once I get on my feet, I can go from there. This thinking will save me from building yet another pen too!

lovely! How many do you have all together? how many cockerels and pullets? Also...on the pullets, what color hackles do each of them have? I don't keep any of the gold hackled girls here, per Village Chicken's suggestion from a conversation last year on breeding the birchens.

Gorgeous kids, gilavina! I'm jealous. The brown head spot is apparently common on ER (Birchen) based chicks which BCMs are supposed to be. I'm curious to hear how that little one grows out.

hmmm...I hadn't heard that before....I just think its curious where I think it might be a pullet. Do you know if ones with spots like that tend to correlate with more coppering or no connection?

Oh and Thanks! They are quite entertaining and satisfy that wild card hatch for the season. Now its onward with individual matings!
