Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Yes, we did that so it would be easy to clean... didn't think about slipping. I think that is an easy fix with shelf liner.

Agreed! Easy fix with the liner.

I was finally able to get a good photo showing the real color of those lavender looking eggs I get from the Marans from time to time. Tried to hatch a couple of them out with the fridge babies but they didn't hatch. They are the some of the hardest eggs to hatch with this extra thick coating on them. Have only ever been able to hatch one out and that was a couple years ago.

WOW... those are pretty. We were just talking about eggs like that on the olive egger thread. Do you think it is the bloom making them that color and hard to hatch? I have a cuckoo that is laying me a pinkish egg with a lot of bloom. She escaped the other day along with my wheaten Am so if they are fertile I will get me some sex linked olive eggers

Donna~ Thank you.
Yes, I think it is an extra thick bloom that makes them harder to hatch and makes them this color. This bloom cannot be scrubbed off. Heck, I've even tried sanding it off to no avail. Bev has also tried to hatch some of these types of eggs out too and she has also had a hard time getting them to hatch. Wonder how many other folks have tried to hatch some like this out and what their outcome was?

I know I'm going to get an egg like these when I see a rosy colored egg that has a slightly heavier bloom on it out of the blue.....like she is working up to the full on lavender looking ones. Under that coating they are spectacular colored Marans egg.

O M G KIM! Those eggs are AMAZING!

Blue or Black???

Here is one of her next to something black......but her belly area still looks blueish. She is related to Bill Sr., so I probably won't know for sure for a long while.

P.S....I LOVE THIS CHICK! Don't know why, but I do.

Now if I can get the photos of my favorite little Blue Coppers from this hatch to upload.

haha...I don't care what color she is either. That's a gorgeous one!! You should take a pic of her every week in the same stance as she grows to watch her change!

Well..I put the new girls and pair out on the lawn in some protected pens to get them used to the place. The little ones are loving being able to see the other birds around the place, they have calmed down and started to eat and drink, which they wouldn't do in the sale crate (guess I can't blame them)

I'll try to get some pics for ya soon kim. I also have to get some pics of the chicks that are a month old today....got a cockerel with a nice silver coming in on his neck already and also have a blue cockerel getting copper in his neck.. they're changin fast!

Would love to see them. This breed of chickens is best addiction ever! I hope my family and friends never try to do a inter-friend-tion....this is one habbit I will never never give up. Love me some Marans!

Glad to hear they have settled down for you Vicki. When I brought home those Birchens from Zanna they were a little freaked out at first because of their new surroundings but after a couple weeks they were sweet as pie. I HATED that that very large male had that sprig on the blade of the comb. He was a sweet as they come and I almost cried giving him up.
