Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Wow Kim, that's odd and neat all at the same time! I had heard of the term "ghost barring" before, but wasn't sure what it was, thanks Vicki. As for the white feather, see how easy it came out? Don't ya wish you could do that with the combs??

I know I do! All 3 of my big boys here are strutting around with one, big, white sickle feather! Usually, they molt those out within 2 weeks or so, but noooo, these things are hanging on like a proud banner. All the birds here are in various stages of molt, most are coming out of it, and a few are just starting. I think a lot of this has to do with the weird weather we had this winter and now. Bad Charlotte has yet to start! She is so stubborn, and did her bad thing again last night, being the last one in. I figured out why; she is awaiting the roosting of Mr. Pekkar, who will jump her as soon as she hits the run. Funny thing is, he doesn't go to roost, he goes to the backside of the coop and waits for her. Once she enters the run, he comes tearing around the side in a dead run. Poor Charlotte doesn't even try to run any more, she just squats, and waits for the inevitable... The odd thing is, he is the only roo she has ever done this for; I think it's Blue chicken love!

Yep..I see how easy it came out but I'm more worried about how fast it will come back. LOL!

Bad Charlotte has a little half sister here......Bad Betty and she is just like her big sister. Always the last one in at night.

She does have feathered shanks it just doesn't look like it in this photo and they are not street sweepers. Wish they were. I love the body on this girl...but I don't think I will use her for breeding. I'm not impressed with her comb. No sprigs or carnation crud ........just don't like it. We will see.

Looks like 2 black, 2 partridge, 2 porcelain, 8 blue/splash, 2 white, and 5 lavenders.

Is a Dickey a cabinet style incubator? I say open it up and grab out those chicks and close it back up. Hum. should raise back up pretty darn fast and shouldn't effect any of the rest of them...if you are fast. :)

Morning all

Just running by on my way to chores (I took a late morning, too, Vicki! I read in bed for a couple hours - nice!!)

Pink - I think that coloring is really pretty! (though, I know you don't desire it!!)

My hatcher is a Dickey and I'm using little hot dog baskets (turned upside down)....so.....I think I need a new plan!

mornin Katelyn.... I'm just beat. Its a beautiful morning tho and seeing the work I accomplished yesterday looks better with a rested pair of eyes. I'm hoping if I can keep polishing off stuff...one thing at a time, I will be at the place where I think I can get the ground leveled to the south finally. Especially if the weather stops dumping rain every day I have off. Yesterday was the first day I had off that it didn't rain in well over a month. yarg. well...not that I have had many days off lately.

I have looked at them before... just forgot. I am just not that into Brahmas.... good thing. They had some pairs for sale at Newnan... those birds are HUGE... Like a goose! Good thing they are docile birds... except the roo I have.

I have to move all the eggs in the bator to the hatcher to keep them warm. The bator is binding up so my son is going to help me take it apart and try to fix it once and for all. It is coming lose at the nuts and gears and then getting stuck on the wood and can't move. It is going to burn the motor up if I don't get it fixed. Then I have to fix the fan in the hatcher too.
