My last hatch of Marans I got from Nancy (bargain), gave me 5 girls and 1 boy. I don't know what I'm doing different this year, I also had the same luck with one of my d'Uccle hatch. The 2nd d'Uccle though, was 3 boys and one girl. As for that major lottery it sounds better when you say 1/2 billion.

Thanks, she's a real sweety too! This camera makes a lot of noises like the old 35mm cameras. Zoom is loud, click is loud, and then it makes a noise to when the pic is taken. Doesn't bother me, but evidently the chooks hate it!

As for the green leafy thing, I have NO clue, but I sure wish they would go away! They are a tuberous and voracious weed, with tap roots that are about 9"-12" long! If you don't get the whole thing out they come right back!
Ah....thats definitely dockweed then. i hate that stuff. I just don't know the proper name for it.

Hi, I don't have time to read thru the incredible length of this thread and have a couple questions.

I really like dark eggs and am thinking of adding a few marans. I would only get wheaten/blue wheaten or possible blue copper. Where is a good source for chicks for these colors? I'm in WI.

Also, I always stay away from the single combed breeds due to our winters. Would these guys be ok? I have brahmas and wyandottes now.

What is the general temperment on those colors? It seems some breeds vary by color.

Thanks!
Jenny

welcome Jenny! I am from WI and have marans, welsummer and andalusian chickens and they do fine for us as long as they have shelter that keeps them dry and protected. We do provide a very little bit of heat durning the most cold part of winter just to keep water from freezing.

As far as finding chicks in the colors you mentioned, not sure but others will chime in and get you in the right direction! Have you checked out the Wisconsin Cheesehead thread??

My first homebred BCM chick from my lone BCM Roo and Hen, so excited :) This is one of two that hatched from 3 eggs set (6 more on lockdown Mon.) Could not find the othey tyke among my Olive Eggers, and Easter Eggers and the hiding under their ecoglo! Had a 16 hour power outage 4 days before lockdown but got temps stable after 6 hours with a car battery. Was not hopefull for the hatch but 20 out of 21 eggs hatched happy, healthy chicks!!!
