Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

well...took the first round out the incubator...so I'm sitting at 54 chicks, one didn't make it out of the shell and 20 more are in the incubator....3 hatched ones, and a few pipped...and only a handful that haven't done anything yet, so not too bad! They are big chicks! I'll get some pics when they've rested a bit....they are eating and drinking like fiends at the moment!

I went out to check on the girls a few minutes ago and notice that one was staying close to the coop instead of free ranging. Picked her up and saw she has an eye pecked out. Anything to do besides antiseptic?

oh no....thats too bad! definitely antiseptic....im not sure if you'll have to watch that the others don't try to attack the wound or not....for some of mine i know i'd have to cover it or separate her

Meet Luna the Cuckoo Maran. She is so sweet, calm and beautiful. I picked her up 3-4 days ago and I can not believe how calm she is for being 4 weeks old.

I think she was beginning to develop wry neck when I first got her. When she sat down, her neck would twist back like I've never seen in a chick. I gave her poly vi sol in the beak and she stopped doing this by the second night.

Hi all. I'm new to BYC. I bought my first Maran in January. She is a Wheaten. At first, I was just curious about the breed, but my hen has sold me due to her size, amazing personality and beauty. Now I am trying to learn more about the breed. I've seen the Golden Duckwing's and would really like to find a trio for myself.

Thanks, but none have been picking on her as far as I can see. They free range outside my office window so I can keep an eye on them. Went ahead and re-candled everything in the incubator. Ended up pulling 14 out and cracked them. Apparently, I didn't do a very good job the first time as these had some blood in them and a few veins, but no chicks. I'm on day 13 so I expected to see at least a few with more development. All the others are full of a blob, for lack of a better word. I hope those are chicks.

That's good that she's not being bothered by the others. Also, it's gotta be nice to have the view of them freeranging while you work outside! Hope she heals up just fine for you.

My least favorite marans cockerel (out of four) is now crowing..... His name is Cantstandya (get it?
wink.png
) and is a silver birchen- 7 weeks old. Is it common for this breed to crow early? None of our other cockerels (different breeds) in the past have ever crowed this early- maybe starting around 20 weeks. Just curious if this is common with the breed- or just an overload of testosterone in this beast of a bird lol. He will be finding a new home soon.......

Picture taken at 6 weeks....

haha...yeah, they crow early alright.....just ask some of the people on here. The first batch of the year I had one taking stabs at crowing at 2 weeks old....it was insane!

Just did a check in the hatcher again thru the clear door....I have 8 chicks in there now, which brings my total up to 62 chicks. 12 left to go and lost one to getting stuck in the shell. So far not bad at all! Hopefully I'll have pics soon
