Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Right on! Will check back in later to see if you have loaded any photos. Posting is very slow going this morning. Argh!

No kidding....i ended up giving up on posting photos. I also have tomorrow off so I can probably get better photos then...most of the ones I have are wind blown and awkward!

I am having problems posting, hoping it posts okay. I think you have cockerel, pullet, cockerel.

thanks for your input. I lost one of the four chicks I bought the first night. I was hoping for a trio but I would be happy with one pullet. I'll have to let them grow up to see which roo i like better.

So has anyone else had these off colored chicks from a supposedly pure line of bcm's or should I continue my search for good stock?

Well she had some other marans breeds but they were all in different pins so they weren't cross breeding. She acted like getting these chicks from her bcm's was common. About 1 in every 50 or so.

Uh oh, the comb police are here!

Well I don't know then until your chicks grow out neither will you so if you are wanting a good start find a reputable breeder bite the bullet and pay the price you will end up miles ahead. You will have to be placed on a list from most breeders and wait which is not a bad thing as you can grow your other chicks up and see what they become. The pullets will lay eggs you can see the color of the eggs and just enjoy them until you get your other chicks so all is not lost. Join the Marans club and ask for a breeder list, call or write to different breeders and decide what to do. All Marans are a work in progress. Remember they just were admitted into the standard so we are all working on getting our birds to the SOP and some breeders never worried about anything other than the egg color....after all it isn't a Marans unless they lay a 4

Great advice Lotsa! Not how I did it buying 2 adult hens and a freebie Roo. But hey a gal needs to practice and learn on adults before experimenting with babies.... ;)

It just seemed wise to learn very simple chicken husbandry first and try out a couple of breeds. Truly all I want is a small laying flock, but the breeding is in the blood from many years showing dogs.

Love you guys but I just don't have much time to spend here due to the dog club lists, but I do check in and try to keep up.
