Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Well Vicki, get to feeling better! Allergies is one malady I don't suffer with. Lots of folks around here are saying this is the worst year they have ever seen for allergies, I guess the early warmth really kicked them into gear? Put on some sun glasses and stay with us!

I dimmed the light on my screen and it is muuuuch better. I never had allergies much except for pollen irritating my eyes and have permanent scaring on the inside of my eyelids that will inflame and then scratch across my eyes...it is entirely uncomfortable and tiring.

One of these days when I have some time I might see if I can get some more update photos of my birds growing out. Its been a while and they have grown like crazy!

TWO SG pips!

I'm going to bed now, it's going to be an up and down night! Thanks for all the good wishes, they must be working!!

Donna-thanks for reminding me!

Can you explain the Velcro bracelets again??

I'm not having much luck with the vet wrap...
It falls off way too easily when I quickly pop it on the chicks as I take them out of the hatcher.

I DO, however, like vet wrap better than the zip ties in that it doesn't have to be changed as much while they're growing quickly!

Hoping the Velcro might be a happy medium!!
Thanks!

Congrats, Debbi!

They just took their time developing perfection!
(good thing you waited!!)

First the vet wrap.... I find you REALLY have to seal it at the leg and over do it. I also find that some colors come lose easier. I use the vet wrap till they are about 2 mths old. If they fall off.... try to catch them and replace it. The colors I find DON"T work very well are Cream, Orange and Yellow.... the Black, Blue, Green work best at my place.

I cut matching pieces of Velcro and connect them so they over lap about 1/2 inch - 3/4 inch. On one side I wrap colored pipe cleaner or cleaners. You can use any combination of colors. These are really great. You can have 4 colors if you want or more. I will pick a color for the FAMILY relationship (If they all came from the same pen) then add a color for individuals in that family. I just posted this on another thread and someone informed me there is strechy Velcro. I find I really only have to adjust these for the roos and only once or twice. The pullets.... they seems to not grow enough to have to readjust them. Velcro come in colors too......

Thanks!

Pink will. Not. Stay. On. Lately.
Red and yellow haven't been much better...
Makes test mating REALLY hard to get results...

Black and dark blue work just fine.

Sorry for making you post twice-the other thread won't open for me tonight...

I'm going to try the Velcro idea!
Thanks!

Pink is not too good either. I have not tried red.... didn't seem like a good color for chickens.

My keyboard is not working right.... that is my story....

Gilavina: one of the perks that won me over to the bees is that it's supposed to work miracles on allergies, one spoonful of unprocessed honey in the morning. It has something to do with the bees working with the local pollen, so the honey should be local. I don't know if this is true and probably won't find out soon as I hear we won't get honey the first year.

Katelyn, congrats on the piggies! How are they doing? Does Momma let you near? I'm to pick up our 4H pigs on Saturday. DH has surgery on Friday and will be down and out. I've never so much as touched a pig before in my life. I will have a pick-up, but think that is NOT going to contain a 70lb pig, any suggestions? Wear a helmet?

yeah...it does work for allergies that affect sinuses and respiratory, but not for the pollen that goes directly into the eyes. I don't think sticking honey in my eyes to test it out is worth all that mess haha
