Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Don and Walt both have been telling us this all along. It makes sense too, with the fact that you can bring in other problems that the other color varities may carry, whereas your blacks may not, and vice versa. Also, if you breed Blue x Blue, you will get Blacks, those are the ones they say not to breed back into the BCM flocks. Blue X Blue = 50% Blue, 25% Black, and 25% Splash.
Yeah that is what I was trying say when I said that people breed blue black splash all together. I am challenged sometimes.

Blacks should be blacks.
Blue pens should be totally separate..even the by product of blue to blue (black and splash) should not be used in your black pens. Well I guess obviously not splash in the black pen...lol.. but blacks from your blue to blue matings should not be considered blacks for your black breeding.

Of course I am at the stage where I am gonna have to do some cross over breeding of these colors just to get enough of each one...but after that I promise!! lol

Atta girl!! Loved those Blue Copper young ladies you posted, especially the first one! Stick a fork in that goat, I say she's done!!
haha...I sure hope that Ina pops out those babies soon! My nerves are getting frazzled...every day I have to go to work for a long period of time or if it storms at night I can't help but get nervous!

Thanks about the blue copper girls. My goal is to get myself at least 6 to 10 really good blue coppers like that darker one. I do love most everything about that first one!

Ok, you've all heard stories, ad nauseum, of my wannabe Wheaten, bad arse roo, Pip. Every time he growls and wing dances at me, I have to keep asking myself, "WHY is that PIA still here????" Well, yesterday, he showed me the sentimental side of why...

I was on the computer, and could hear the chickens in the front yard, doing their chicken thing. All of a sudden, I hear a couple of the hens alert, then Pip starts to growl loudly! Next, I hear a Cooper's Hawk that sounds really close to the house, like maybe 20 feet away from the chickens. Pip is really growling now, so I go outside. The hens and another roo are now under the cover of the front porch, and they are worried. Yup, there sits Mr. Cooper right over the top of my shed, about 15' from the house! Then I look around the corner and see Pip. He is blown up twice his size. hackles flared, and starring at the hawk! Then I see what he is defending...the 3 little kittens had ventured out into the yard, and there was Pip just daring this hawk to try to get one! The hawk was intent on a meal, and even though I waved and yelled he stayed right there. I asked Pip, "what are you doing silly roo?" I swear to you, he looked at me, looked at the hawk, then turned his head and looked back at the kittens! It was quite clear to me what he was doing..."good boy Pip, good roo!" Walked over to where the hawk was and he took off. All chickens then proceeded with their business. Man, who says chickens are dumb??? Just when I begin to think he's looking like enchilada meat, he does something sweet like this!

Ahhh that's so sweet. Yeah Pip!
That is what my lav orp roo does. He adopts baby kittens and when one of our muscovy hens only hatched one baby duckling last year and lost interest of caring for her early on, it became HIS duckling and he just kinda took over mommy duties. That duckling followed him everywhere lol. We have stray cats around here that have babies in the nest boxes sometimes that are out for the freerangers. The lav roo (his name is Tank) gets in there with them when the momma cat gets out to eat and snuggles them under his wings. I think he is part SheMale LOL!

You'd better; seems like we've all been waiting too!

haha indeed! I think because she spontaneously aborted last year and my other doe (her sister) at the time I lost to complications in birthing that, even a vet couldn't save her....makes me soooo nervous. I'm extremely grateful she is carrying to term... her actual due date just passed...so any day now!
