Complex patterns:

Meant are black patterns on individual groundcolored feathers, not the dark/melanized versions of wildtype up to black. Examples are lacing (concentric pencilling, double and single lacing), spangling (not mottling) and transverse pencilling (autosomal barring).Sexlinked barring or cuckoo is in the next paragraph ... . Black pigment is shifted and sometimes enhanced for these effects.


THe difference is the location of the "barring" gene: is it the one on the sex chromosomes, or the one on the autosomal chromosomes. I seem to remember reading some where, perhaps Tadkinsons thread) that the phenotypes can be confusing in rare instances.

If anyone can translate that to Southern English I would appreciate it

They are different..... one is sex linked (reg barring and cuckoo.... I knew that was) so the autsomal barring is a problem with a pattern like lacing? so they are culls for sure? right? I was doing that anyway..... I didn't like that look at all. Would that make it a cull for any breed? not just Marans?

I have one broody that hogs the one nest box. Of course the other girls squeeze in to donate and I take all the eggs for incubating, but I do wonder when she will give up. She was my girl that started laying earlier in the winter than all the others, so I would like her back in action ! LOL

I have a Cuckoo that has gone broody. It is funny, she FUSSES SOOOOO much, my Olive Egger know what is coming (she is in the pen before the Cuckoos) and she ALWAYS jumps up where she can see what all the fuss is about. She never pecks me, I get all the eggs.... she is sticking it out, If I can find a place to put her she will be getting my Ameraucana Eggs.....

I was thinking they would be a great Olive Egger cross. Sex linked too if you use Cuckoo hens.

Mine gave up about 2 days ago. Every time we saw her in the nest he tossed her out in the yard. Oh what a fuss she makes. She has been broody for about 2 months. We also moved her to a private pen. That way she couldn't steal eggs. Today was the first day I saw her out in the yard until my corgi chased her into the woods. Now if she will lay me those nice chocolate eggs again.

Donna your boy was quiet on the ride home. He peeped a few times. He discovered pizza crust. And so starts the spoiling. Now if only I could get the kids to be that quiet in the car. He is in a raised pen in a 20 x 10 run all by himself. He may think he hit the jack pot!

Yeah, I bet he does, either that or he is on death row since he is all alone. I hope he grows up purdy for ya and make lost of pretty babies

Lets see he had his first worm and pizza and a 10 x 20 pen.... yeah he hit the jack pot!

We will want pics down the road as he grows. I will set those eggs tomorrow and keep you posted. I just barely got my eggs in lockdown today.... what a day.... rush rush rush.

I was just playing with the color calculator, too bad it doesn't give chick colors. I have 2 roosters that are black split for lav Ameraucanas. I think these will work to get OE and sexlinked chicks. THough I also have 2 blue boys and they should work too! Chickens are much too much fun!
