Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

I see on the BC some feather shafting and eventually will have too much breast color to use as a breeder. The Comb would be called uneven serration not a sprig I believe.

The splash is all around the better male. Are all of these out of the same breeding pen or seperate ?

The Cockoo is most likely a male as he has saddle feathers. Looks to have a lopped comb and maybee Vulture Hocks.
Hi Don,

Can you explain vulture hocks. I think I see it in one of my boys. His hocks are closer together than his feet and so he runs funny. Is this vulture hocks?

Don!!!! How are ya? Good to have you back!

Arielle, The Vulture Hock is wanted in D'uccle bantams. It is stif feathering coming from the drumstick part of the leg pointing at an angle to ground.. In the Marans it is very unwanted and should be culled for when found in any degree. If you breed this forward it will only get worse every generation.

Keep in mind that these are only my opinions.

Arielle, the condition you describe is called Knocknee or cowhock which ever sounds best. They should be culled for this also.

Good to see you Don! I'm workin on gettin some pictures of those girls we talked about, but its been pouring the last two days and rainin again today. we definitely need it, but it makes everything messy!

Kim, enjoying the heat and humidity here in Michigan.

Will do a couple of posts for everyone soon on breeding poultry in general.

Vicki, Will keep an eye out for the Pullets. It sure is a pleasure looking at good bred Marans like you are breeding.
well shoot! Thanks! Where's a blushing smiley when ya need one. Funny thing is that I feel like I still have so far to go most days. Love the challenge tho!

Been thinking for a while of makin a simple photo booth in the main part of the barn where I can take it down when not in use but also get it set up in a minute to be able to take shots when i need. Just cant make up my mind the best way to get it done where they will feel comfortable enough to get a good photo.

Alrighty, here's my eggies. 22 of them are ones that came from Rod, the two eggs in the top carton all the way to the right are the first eggs coming from my black birchen girls here. I'm happy to report, they are not doing too bad either!!!
