Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Since we're talking sexing dilemmas, here's mine.

This is my splash cuckoo:

I had been assuming cockerel from the get-go, mostly because of those beefcake legs and the comb growth. This was the only cuckoo I had hatch with a bunch of other BCMs and Ameraucanas, so I really have nothing good to compare it with.

This is a Blue Copper, and most definitely a roo.

The Blue boy is easily double the size of the little Cuckoo. Actually, all of the BCMs I hatched (including a definite pullet) are much, much larger than this one. The Cuckoo's size is much more on par with the Ameraucanas of the same age.

So I guess I have two questions:

1. Is there an appreciable size difference between BCMs and Cuckoos?

2. Is there any chance that my Cuckoo is a pullet?

Thank you!

I don't know that anyone can tell me anything from these cause there not very good pics she said they were not happy about going in the box. Anyway here they are fire away cause I want to know.
Heres what I think I've picker up from you guys.

The comb is no good
I don't see any white other than light glare
Waddle seems good
Tail set is ok not great
Both Not mossy
The hen does not have enough copper on the neck
both not good foot fethering

What I'm most curios about do the look Bev

There is just no way to look at a Marans and tell who it came from originally. The male appears to have white ear lobes and green legs, the male has huge wattles. You could bet the Bank that these did not ever come from Bev Davis.

Thank you!
I still think the cuckoo is a roo..... I think...... I have noticed some chicks just don't thrive, or get as big as the others. I almost think they are not getting to the food and water because they are being pushed around. When I find chicks that are not the right size I usually put them with the next size down. I don't usually see any more issues. They seem to catch up, unless they die. I had one die today. I moved him yesterday to the brooder with my newest hatch (he was 2 weeks older) and he was even smaller that most of then. Just didn't make it. I have another that had leg issues and he is not growing either. We will see.....

I do notice my Blue and Black Coppers out grow ALL the other breeds I have.

X2! Glad you said that about the green legs, thought I was seeing things. Pigeonguy, don't get caught up in the "big names" game. Most of the time, they are so far removed from the original source, there is no telling what has been bred into them. That would explain your roo's legs.

Can a chicken have green legs not for standard but is it possible or could it be lighting. either way its to late now. I do thank you for you oppinon cause you see things others don't.I Will be much wiser in the future and that is credited to this thread.

Look what hatched today at my house.

Oh, YES i DID!!!!!!!!!!!

and just had to share with my friends here in the Marans thread since I rarely post anywhere else. I adopted 5 adult African Geese and 2 juvenile females today and 2 of the adults are broody.....one is obviously in the middle of a hatch and the other is still sitting on 5 (was 28 but I pulled lots because they weren't any good) due to hatch any moment.

When we build I can have anything I want I am sure, just not now. They will love the creek, it has lots of little fish and nice deep spots and duck paradise.
