Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Vicki~

Sorry, should have been more clear. Dark in the hackle, as in not showing lots of copper, or very little to none.

sorry, my computer was taking forever to load some photos this morning.

My splash copper boy doesn't show a ton of copper but throws well balanced colored boys, so I wouldn't be afraid to test out both of them and see what they give you. In my experience splash birds don't usually present the patterning as well defined as a blue or black.

Good morning ladies.

Yes, we sure needed that rain. Could still stand to have 3 days of a steady rain, but I'll take what I can get. The flies seem less this morning, until the sun gets out more.
What is it with psycho broodies?? How long after you pull them off of the eggs or chicks do they start laying again? That Splash hen of mine hasn't laid an egg now since she went broody, and she got pulled from the broody pen about 2 weeks ago. Still, no eggs from her.

Got a possible buyer for 3 more layer hens; I need them outta here! Now to pare down the Silkie flock. One buyer backed out, so guess it's time to put up another ad. The Marans eggs are picking up again, and since I wormed them again, the color is darkening back up. I fear Clyde may have gotten too big a dose with the Eprinex, he acts like he is not feeling well at all. No signs of sickness, like a snotty nose or runny eyes, or cough; but he is quiet, and I can just tell he doesn't feel good. He eats and drinks, and breeds just fine. Going out there to give him some B Complex to see if that doesn't perk him up some. All the other chooks look fine.

I've never really paid too close attention when girls started back to laying after being broody. A couple of weeks doesn't sound too out of range to me tho.

Hope Clyde perks up alright! I like that boy!

Looks like momma kitty moved the little injured one too up the haymount. I'll wait to see how the little ones doing for a day or so, to give momma time to care for the little one. I really hope she makes it, its just beautiful. Just one of those times when its best to leave it to Ella as she knows how best to care for the little one.

So, here's the newest update photos of my oldest cockerels and my favorite pullet. All of them are really coloring in nicely and filling in well.

just a bit ruffled up from me catching her up.

Hi I am new to this thread but have been reading from begining. omg 36000 post I am on about 4000. It is interesting though.

What I am wondering is if any of you have heard of cheep chicks hatchery in Princeton, IN. I have ordered BCMs from them. That was before I found your thread hope they are good because I did not ask the right questions acording to what has been posted. I just wanted pretty chickens didn't know they were so much work to keep to standard. Oh well sound like fun anyway. Acording to the site they will be Bevs birds at first when I read that it was like ok now its like WOW after reading this thread..

Hope you don't mind me joining in probly won't post much but will be reading.

pinkchick thanx for the happy fathers day

The more the merrier here!

I've never heard of the place you mentioned before, but will say, take the claims of being from a certain person or a certain line with a grain of salt until you see how the birds grow out.

My first impression is pullet, but Lord knows I've been way wrong before!
haha....that's what I'm starting to think. I was totally sold it was a cockerel, but now I'm starting to wonder. You wouldn't believe how built this bird is. If its a pullet, I'm gonna be doin a happy dance!
