I have actually thought about that.... you never know. There are 4 poisonous snakes native to TN copperheads would be the most common. Water moccasins would maybe be next. The 2 rattle snakes would be rare here, but they are here.
I did the skin pricks too. All mild reactions, very mild compared your reaction!! Horses and feathers on the mild side and mites were the worst. Figures it all came from years of sleeping on an old feather pillow! Tossed it and now my pillows need to be washed regularly. Brushing the horses or changing blankets is the worst. I try to avoid those chores.

We have only 2 : coppers and rattle snakes. Very rare. The area they are known to inhabit is no wheres near me!!

I called my mom who is at work tonight to talk to her about it and she just lit up. I don't know why neither one of us thought about it before! I just hope I am able to connect with a place around here that I can talk to and see what all would be involved in the process and if indeed one would be a good fit for my dad.

In thinking about it - I bet, with some special training and a very special dog, they could find you one to alert high blood sugar, just like they have dogs that will alert a seizure before it strikes!
I guess it all comes down to the chemicals released and the scent that results!

He's a Border Collie!
I never saw hind dew claws before either...
But - he had to have them off b/c it would be very bad if he tore one off while working the animals in the rough....

We got him from an Amish farmer at 6 weeks old, so no options on removing them at birth!

Wow! Never heard of rear dews on a BC! The only dogs I have ever seen with rear dews were Pyranees, and they are supposed to be there on them...why,

C'mon, at least the Wheaten chick is Marans! If you don't like Lazer, that's ok, the SGs are an aquired taste...

Worth doing. MY rottie had 8 puppies. All tails docked, all dew claws removed. COuldn't see having them get ripped off later. OUch. But then I did pay for two knee surgeries at $1100 each. Tufts wanted $2500-4000, per knee!!! I happened to stumble upon a vet that regularly repaired the knee ligaments for the field dogs.

Is Abby on anti-inflammatories?? Honestly, I've never had a horse with laminitis. SO I have lno first hand knowledge about it beyond the basics to recognize it. Did the vet change her feed? I hope you were able to catch it early and slow down the process.

She's been lame from a P2 fracture since she was 10 (now 20), so deals really well with pain and what her body needs.
Also had a bunch of foals before I got her, so a really confident and competent momma, so doesn't wear herself out chasing her filly around.

I've never had a horse with laminitis before either...
I have her on bute and have them in a 20x20 deeply bedded stall with a run.
She only has to take 3 steps to hay or water at any time.

She retained her placenta and blew a 105 fever before the vet could get it all flushed.
No more fevers with bute and antibiotics, but.....she's VERY uncomfortable on her feet.

She didn't say anything about changing her diet...she's on grow n'win and beet pulp (hay and water) - ?? -
She's a grand old lady...stressing

The showgirl made my kids laugh! I don't know anything about wheaten MARANS..... or AMs for that matter

The MAMA's have the gypsy face too and they are maybe about a year old now IDK really, but close to that. See we all learned something didn't we? This is the first I heard about this being a BAD thing. I knew I didn't like the LOOK.

The pullet I originally mentioned is about 3 months.

Can you please post a pic?

I know I have 2 or 3 youngsters, from my most recent hatch, who are dark around the face - which I've never seen before.

BUT I don't have anyone with a pinked up comb with a dark face (laying age)

so....cull for ANY dark faces or just adult dark faces.

(I learn something new every day on this board!!)
