Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

I agree with what Barb has said about #11, He just does not have the overall type as the other male, I find fault with the wing, tail carriage. The comb is not acceptable as a breeder if as you say you want to breed for the SOp. I just believe the chest and back are lacking.

Donna, last I looked the SOP stated positive enamel white, this male just has very little in picture and maybe can see another picture to make sure he even has a little white. I ssure you this small amount would not be deduct for in any show I have been to.

Don - I had this very question a couple weeks ago!

So - would you use a hen with a bit of pale skin on the ear lobe?
I have 2 sitting in the layer house while I wait to see if it grows out...

So Vicki, did they get the AC back on at work? Hope you all fared well up there today?
The AC was working enough to say it was cooler inside than out, but not by much. One of the coolers is still acting up, so had to empty it and move everything to one of the big coolers in back and then pull everything for the floor cleaning company that comes in everyonce and a while. I'm pooped! I also open tomorrow, so get the joy of putting it all back. Then off to the poultry meeting. I'm really praying that all goes really well!

Candled the birchen eggs and have an even dozen developing! I am so excited I can't hardly stand it!

I have no idea. I don't think I've ever seen a Splash hen with the copper? I will leave that to someone else that has bred far more than me, I only have one Splash pullet, and she has no copper.

What color(s) were this gal's parents?
Her parents were both splash. We purchased two splash hens and a rooster at a show. One hen and the rooster had a couple red feathers. We hatched a bunch of eggs from these three. We then sold the hen and rooster with red as we thought we wanted and could breed splash without the red/copper. We have since learned how prevelant red is in the splash roosters. We have therefore decided to try and get two flocks of splash. It seems the effort to get roosters without red is about the same effort necessary to get hens with the red. We have no plans to introduce any other colors into our splash flock. We will work to get what we are looking for from within these splash.

This is our splash rooster with the by far the most red/copper. We will put him over our red flock to see what we get from him.

Could not figure out how to post more than one picture in one post .... so here's another of our red splash roo
don't know why the picture turned sideways?
