Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Nope, not your screen. He does have a few saddle colored spots there. Almost like his saddle feathers are up there out of place and not down the sides on the saddle where they belong. I have been watching these feathers and they are slowly turning black from the base of the feather to the tip. Looks like the black color is traveling out the feather if that makes any sense.

that's a new on one me. I'd be curious to see if he does lose it indeed.

Wonder what causes that red to move to the tail area like that. What do you think will happen if it doesn't go away and it remains?

I guess test mating is the only way to find out, huh?

I should have had a V-8!

I really really only want this birds egg color genetics and red. What type female would you pair this male up with?

I'm not sure on the tail color. I don't know for sure if it is another expression of overcoloring, similar to what happens on the breast or what? If it were me, with the test mating I would pick one of your girls with the most coloring on her neck and one without any color and test mate both separately and see what you get. Girls with the best body type you can get as well would give you a really good indication of what he's worth.

Hi Kim,

Yes, I can see the red in his tail coverts too. On the plus side, at least they aren't white! Does he by any chance have some Wheaten in his background? Wheaten males can have some red in their tail feathers I believe. He is that very dark red, so can't see him helping too much putting any color on the pullets if you are using dark hens. Try him out and see what happens, that's the best way to find out. Who are his parents?? The comb needs improvement, but hey, you and I have both seen MUCH worse!! I like him type-wise.

I'm thinking of using Bill's F1 Blue Copper daughter that does not show any copper, but has great type and thinking of using my only Black Copper female, problem is she doesn't have tons of copper in the hackle. She does have a nice little shape about her though.

Other problem is......Bill's dtr. (both of them matter of fact) are now broody and trying to sit in the same nest box.

Ding Dongs! It's turned into a broody nightmare around here. The icing on the cake........BAD Betty has also been trying her wing at being broody the last week or so. She is such a ditz! This should be a fun little adventure with Betty.

Have you guys heard of the shooting in CO? Horrible. Im in Law Enforcement and this really makes me angry! My heart goes out to all those Innocent people and the family's.
Yes, I saw that too. This world is becoming a very scary place. I hate to think what it will be like when my grandkids are adults. My prayers go out to all involved...

Debbi~

Let me begin with here.......these are the eggs that are suppose to have been from the same stock as Bill originated from (New Years Day hatch) and then come to find out after I hatched them out, she had in the last year to year and half added Wade Jeane lines to her flock. Of course there is a chance that Wheaten is in the genes somewhere. I would actually take that to the bank. Let me say as well that the woman I originally got Bill from does not breed for anything but egg color. She care less about anything else so skys the limit on what can pop.

If I cross him over the only female I have here that still has that Florida bird blood in her I guarantee I see all sorts of things creep up.
The young BCM cockerel that I have posted photos of recently with the shafting in the breast (this cockerel has that Florida lineage in it) is finally starting to show cinnamon primaries in the wing triangle.
