Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

ok, I have a few questions for all you who do breeding. I have a third generation olive egger roo. (He was suppose to be a pullet) That's my luck. The 1st generation was BCM to Ameraucana. Those chicks were bred back to an unrelated BCM. Those chicks were again bred back to a BCM. He was hatched from a green egg. He has a straight comb and looks BCM. If I decide to keep this roo....would he be more likely to carry the brown egg gene or could he possibly have a green egg gene? Or khaki? I am trying to get different colored eggs (and different colored chicks). My other chickens are EE's, RIR, BR, Buff Orp, and a brown leghorn. What would his chicks look like with these combos and would they have olive eggs or mostly brown?

Here is the Olive Egger thread.

First he will more than likely carry the Dark Marans Egg color since he has a straight comb and is mostly Marans. Olive Eggers typically should have a pea comb to carry the blue egg genes.

Since he is mostly Marans his chicks will mostly look like Marans, unless they look like the hen

You can use him with your EE to try to make more Olive Eggers. He should not be used in a Marans pen JMHO.... but since you don't have Marans I don't think you will. If you cross him with your brown egg layers he may darken their egg color some, but not as dark as a pure Marans would be, but pretty colors.

The fun of egg colors and genetics is you never know what you will get

Thanks. I am sooooo undecided about keeping my roo. I really only wanted laying hens. Not sure I want to "look over my shoulder" with a roo in the yard, or deal with feathers missing from my beautiful girls, and stuff like that. But, I raised him since he was 3 days old and I kind of hate giving him away. I am not into breeding, just want fun eggs. I may want to hatch some eggs (would buy some) just to get some unusual chickens. (Like a frizzled polish or frizzled turkey neck......by the way, aren't you the one who had frizzled turkey necked green egg layers?????) I think I would like a welsummer and an Isbar and a CL., a speckled sussex, a Salmon Favorella and maybe some odd sorts of EE's. Anyway, thanks for your comments.

Where is everyone? QUiet night.

I have been wondering the same thing! Very quiet tonight.

I was hoping to get some pictures tonight of my youngest Marans, but it was just waaay too hot, but am hearing 80s over the weekend, so maybe I'll get some then where they aren't panting with their wings drooping.

My sell of the Cuckoos fell through

I have been holding them for about 6 weeks for her..... Well they are on CL now. Along with Olive Eggers, Easter eggers, and some chicks. I need to thin them down ASAP. I need to get reorganized for the fall.
