Vicki, If I had access to some of the makings of the Blue copper like that one I would certainly be involved with Blue Copper. I like the Blue Copper, White, Wheaten and the Black Copper. The Black copper is the hardest to breed variety of poultry I have ever tried to breed to standard, Sometimes I even wonder if it is even possible. The Pullet looks great.
I definitely hear what you are saying and why I've chosen to work on them without the pressure of making money off of them. With all the breeds and varieties I raise I feel a very strong sense of responsibility to do right by them and make them as good as I can get them and to me that also means finding people who also have similar mindsets to be good stewards of them. It sure ain't cheap or easy, but I am happy to do what I can, especially for the marans. Its good to know that I'm making a difference.

The other wing looks worse but he won't turn so that I could get a good shot. Ignore the cucumber he is standing over....

I think that is split wing and VERY hard to breed away from. I cull for that one every time. I am NOT telling you or anyone to breed a sprig, but I don't think that is as hard to breed against. BUT, I have never tried. Split wing is REALLY REALLY genetic. I would think it would pass on to 90-100%.... a sprig, I don't think that one would do that high, maybe 50%, but that is still too high. Even the ones that don't express the sprig could be CARRIERS lol... like the plague.
I did some reading about sprigs and personally I plan to cull every time I see them no matter how good the rest of the bird looks- it would take a lot of time and single mating to figure out who is a carrier which equals more space than I have.
