Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Hi All ... Been Reading and learning Thank you Vicki and Don for all the photos and comments to refer back to:
I have some updated photos of my "Groceries" from Donna... They hatched June 7th...
Here are my Black Copper...All of the Black copper have great leg feathering...
The first two were shown at fair this past weekend... They didn't have a Marans category... but they won 2nd in the open.
Not allot of copper on these two.. but I have someone with a black copper roo with more copper that wants to trade me.. yeh for me!

The one posted above here may not stay in the breeder pen.... she has a mossy chest and is a bit small...but if she is put with the very black roo....???

The little blue copper girl above... is gorgeous!!! she is beefy and has a nice bit of copper...

Here is the Cuckoo Marans:
The boys did not have leg feathering... So I am hoping the girls will help the offspring.....

Donna you will be happy to know only one other showed the copper in the cuckoos...(none of the boys... it was just the girls...)

Here is an odditity:looks like a silkie slipped into your Ameraucanas pens!

Any comments are always appreaciated...
Thanks
Patricia

I knew they had feather problems but I have not seen that before

I actually kinda like him.

I have seen gold on both roos and pullets. But maybe you have something to work with. If not I may have more groceries in the spring. LOL

I am LOVING the little copper on pullets I am seeing

I really like "Him??" too. I was hoping he was a she and I wouldn't have to make a choice... I love the fluffy (Maybe if I get him tamed down Kira will stop bugging me for Silkies) Calm bird too. I hope the fluffy doesn't molt out... He may just end up with the Hall birds... (I have a couple of birds that don't fit in the pens.. fighting... to crowded..etc.. that live in the hall of the barn.)

I have Three new pens to complete this week as I am off from work. (vacation time)
1st for the Cuckoo Marans.. the pens they are in (pallets and netting) were designed more for single pair matings or individual Roos to give the girls a break if needed; I don't feel they have enough space..... 2nd Black Coppers.. They are in the brooder coop.. I have a brooder box (2 compartments) and use the brooder coop for grow out (this has shrunk in size recently).... 3rd for my Light brown leghorns... the girls are in with the Black Pennies and the boys have been in the bachlor coop... poor guys have really gotten picked on in there.. they are just so small...

I ended up getting 6 Buff Leghorns at the Fair this weekend!! couldn't say no... they are just beautiful... had to reduce the size of the brooder coop to make room for them in a flash so they could have thier own space.. (I could say I wasn't planning on buying any birds, but why did I bring extra boxes ready to put birds into!?!?!)

Thanks again for the beautiful Birds...
I am really loving them... Can't wait until the end of october.. Maybe I will get a Marans egg before they stop for the winter?

Quote: I think it is a HE. Get me a better pic of that comb. Look kinda broad for a pullet. Ameraucanas are HARD to sex. So don't do anything rash till he crows.

I can't remember when you got them. My original Marans hatched in mid May and started laying in Late October. Is that about when you hatched yours?

oh well.. I will just have to be patient!

Sorry its new to me as well. I just bought plastic rings to identify our birds. and they come in many colours. I wondered why you might want to tattoo them instead, or some other means of Identification. Maybe I read your post wrong. I just figured the extra work your looking at to mark the birds is all.

Not to speak for Donna at all, but on the tatooing. There are some poultry breeders that use tatooing methods on their birds in case of theft as it is not removable like a band is. Particularly it is considered for high quality breeding stock and for those that go to alot of shows etc. That's just what I've experienced in the poultry community here in the midwest. I've considered it, but not done it yet as I'm still in my development phase on my birds.

I could use those bands, I don't have any and didn't want to order a huge amount. I have a way of tagging when they are bigger.... I just need something easy till they get big enough. I was kidding about tattooing

I am going to get a toe punch. I just need to ID a few that way. Some breeds I have I KNOW what they look like and I don't need to ID them. But some get mixed up. Like Olive Eggers and marans and Ameraucanas. I can very easily get them mixed up. I am trying something new now and I hope it is working... so far I don't see any TAGS laying in the brooder boxes

I have so many birds and breeds I don't think they make enough colors for me LOL.
