Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Thanks for the feedback and compliments on my BCM pullet. I know her comb is not perfect but I was pretty happy with the rest of her. Some of her sisters are sporting her type but not the hackle color. She is a very special bird and jumps out from the rest of the crowd. She is also very tame. I am planning to show her soon. Unfortunately her brothers are not looking so good. All three I kept were on the very dark side. Two I culled yesterday one had a badly twisted wing and the other had a very crooked keel. I am down to one rooster and not too happy with him, but will let him grow out anyway, and I will breed him to his mother, since he hatched from a nice dark egg. The rooster that sired this pullet had a fair sprinkling of red in the breast and was otherwise not anything special and the mother hen of this pullet had a respectable copper hackle and nice type when a pullet herself.

Snowbird your comment is good and one of the things I really like about her is how deep her black is. Maybe I will breed a male this year who is really strong in the comb to breed her next year.

Kim Best of luck to you in your move. Are you moving your flock with you?

Thanks

Andy

Well...I ended up with a few pics before dark since they stopped harvesting earlier than I thought they would. Its been just plain frigid today, the only thing that warmed me up was loading, hauling, and storing almost 1,000 lbs of feed.
I couldn't get a shot of the one boy I was telling you about Don, he had already gone to roost for the night and wouldn't come out, so I'll keep trying.

Here's update shots on my two youngest copper boys. Not the greatest pics as the blue wouldn't stop running away from the camera. I like his color tho. Oh, and excuse all the feathers, its heavy molting time in the Sussex pen next door.

Here's three of the younger chicks that have recently been weaned off their broody mama. Two cockerels and one pullet. The two have nice copper coming in, one pullet, one cockerel. I believe these are both out of Big Boy my splash in my avatar. They're pretty wild, and love running off to the goat pasture to hang out with them.

Just for fun, Kim, here's two of the Sussex - Marans crosses. They are beastly and wild as march hares. One cockerel and one pullet. They are just beautiful to watch running around. The cockerel is getting nice silver markings on his wing bow even.

NOW THAT is what I call COPPER!

Vicki, They really look good as usual. The size and type really looks good on the three young ones. The width and depth is really to die for believe me.

Good deal! I have been liking what I see so far. I still have another few sets of chicks under different broodies of all ages that I've got to keep my eye on. I'm feeling pretty good about hatching season this next spring, even though I did lose some of those younger ones I was really liking.

If you've got a couple of minutes Don, would you mind popping over the the sussex thread? I posted a few photos of some of my light girls that are just coming out of molt. I've been working on the body type mostly and still need to do some clean up on the combs, but they are looking pretty good from what I can see. Last year I did really well with some of my Sussex at the show, so I'm hopeful for these.

Kim , If I had this Pullet I would take to Ohio National next month and clean house down there. She looks a lot like the Marans Vicki is working with, All I can say is a beautiful Pullet.

Does the wing set seem a little off some way? ?

And what do you think about the big black stripping down the middle of the hackle copper feather coloring?

Again.... Nice looking Pullet,

I am just curious about some finer details.

Well I had a few Marans eggs I hatched and today I found one that looks very much like a splash

I have never hatched a home grown Splash Copper Marans before

That means my blue copper pullets have been laying for a few weeks now..... I will make sure tomorrow... it was still fluffing when I left. Very silvery with some darker patches

Kim I got pictures of your girls eggs today. I think BOTH of these eggs are your girls.

The darker one on the left is from one of my new pullets.

Full shot with my Marans and some EE

Those are the only 2 that I have gotten that are the same size and color. I am going to try to hatch them.... what can it hurt?

Lisa, The wing is almost Horizontal and appears to be real tight looking. The big Black stripe is where you get the copper on the female young fowl. Just a very nice type female. Maybe someone can get Walt to comment when he is back on board.
